Position Summary


This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of nursing unit(s). Oversees comprehensive health care as determined by the scope of practice guidelines and specialty. Manages the nursing practice, including the delivery of patient care, technical services, quality, safety, planning, organizing, staffing, and clerical practices.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide coordination of care and services through the management team of providers caring for unit patients.
  • Manage from pre-admission through discharge including monitoring patient care, addressing patient and family needs, resolving obstacles and problems, planning for patient discharge.
  • Develops a therapeutic relationship with patients, family members, visitors, and colleagues to provide care coordination utilizing evidence-based practice.
  • Interprets and directs the implementation of nursing philosophy and objectives, departmental policies, and procedures, and applies recognized standards of nursing care and practice.
  • Plans, selects, and devises nursing operations, work methods, procedures, workflow and standards for quality and quantity of work, including staffing standards. Plans and develops patient safety innovations and practice improvement.
  • Establishes, implements, and evaluates quality of care to monitor and evaluate operations for compliance with licensure, accreditation, and regulatory standards.
  • Integrate shared leadership and foster collaboration across multi-disciplinary disciplines to arrive at decisions affecting the unit.
  • Assigns, directs, and reviews the work of subordinate supervisors/other nursing personnel. Prepares formal answers to, and recommends the adjustment of, grievances and disciplinary matters.
  • Prepares budget for assigned area or program and is responsible for adherence to approved budget and goals.
  • Plans, assigns and reviews work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hires, trains, develops, and manages staff to ensure that qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Maintain Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Eligibility for registration with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • Degree in nursing (BSN or graduate degree) required.
  • Master's degree in nursing required or health care related field or administration required.
  • A minimum of five (5) years clinical nursing experience with progressive responsibility, which must include a minimum of three (3) years in an inpatient pediatric critical care unit is required.
  • Progressive leadership knowledge of budgetary processes and financial principles, labor laws, standards of care, and regulatory standards is required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five (5) years' management experience is preferred
  • Nursing specialty certification or within 1 year of hire.
  • Strong communication, customer service and decision-making skills.
  • One (1) year of current hospital inpatient experience is preferred.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification is preferred.
