Posting Context Statement

Position Overview:

The Director of the Tribal Nations Student Affairs Office reports to the Executive Director of Tribal Relations and provides experience and visionary leadership to assess, develop and implement recruitment, retention initiatives and academic and social programming utilizing a primary theoretical framework that centers Indigenous pedagogies. The Director assumes primary responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of the center, including the hiring and supervision of all staff, the development and implementation of programmatic and operational procedures, recruitment, Tribal outreach and engagement, administration of budgets, grant writing, development of short and long-range goals in keeping with the mission and strategic of the University of Idaho and The Office of Tribal Relations. The Director will serve on the, and chair for the Native American Scholarships.

Required Experience

  • Three years of experience working on Indigenous issues in higher education or student service programs
  • Experience in Indigenous student recruitment
  • Experience designing and implementing programs focusing on Indigenous students
  • Experience with professional development and training in higher education
  • Experience in marketing and communications (e.g., electronic newsletters, websites, social media)
  • Experience in fundraising and working with constituents
  • Experience in grant writing and oversight
  • Knowledge and experience with budget planning and prioritization of projects, programs and activities
  • Demonstrated experience speaking publicly and conducting presentations

Required Education

  • Master’s degree

Required Other

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
  • Ability to travel

Additional Preferred

  • Ph.D./Ed.D. in student services, higher education leadership, education counseling and guidance, social psychology or other related fields
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze and report statistical information and reach a conclusion supported by research
  • Experience with successful grant writing, program design, delivery and assessment
  • Experience working collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, the media and constituents of the university
  • Demonstrated strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience working collaboratively with Tribal governments and agencies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Native American education policies
