Under the guidance of the Director of the School of Health and Medical Professions (SHAMP), the Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing (DEMSN) Director will hold a full-time, 12-month, tenure track or tenured faculty appointment. This appointment is open to assistant, associate, and full professors. Rank and tenure are negotiable based on how the candidate meets the requirements as outlined in the unit bylaws.

The successful applicant will serve as an integral member of the Direct Entry Master of Science in Nursing program, providing high-quality instruction in areas central to professional nursing practice and nursing education. This may include foundational nursing knowledge, clinical reasoning, health assessment, pathophysiology, pharmacology, population health, leadership, and evidence-based practice. The faculty member will create inclusive, student-centered learning environments; apply evidence-based and innovative teaching strategies; and support competency-based skill development through simulation, clinical instruction, and experiential learning. In addition, the faculty member will contribute to curriculum development and revision; program and student learning assessment; clinical placement planning; simulation program coordination; preparation for accreditation reviews; and the ongoing enhancement of high-quality, contemporary nursing education aligned with AACN Essentials and national licensure expectations.

The successful applicant will maintain an active and impactful scholarly program grounded in evidence-based inquiry and/or quality improvement research. Areas of emphasis should align with contemporary needs in nursing education, such as curriculum innovation, competency-based assessment, simulation science, clinical learning environments, workforce preparation, or student success and progression. Additional areas of focus may include quality improvement research in clinical or educational settings, intervention assessment, outcomes assessment, student-centered research and educational program evaluation, or research using electronic health records (EHRs), large data biobanks, or national datasets (e.g., All of Us, NHANES). The faculty member is expected to disseminate scholarly work through peer-reviewed publications and presentations, pursue external funding when appropriate, and collaborate with colleagues across SHAMP, the university, and healthcare partners to strengthen the school’s research mission.

The successful applicant will contribute meaningfully to the service and leadership needs of the university, SHAMP, and the DEMSN program. Responsibilities include participation in faculty governance, leading and maintaining program accreditation processes, committee work, student mentoring, and community and professional service that strengthens partnerships and advances the nursing profession. The faculty member is also expected to engage in activities that enhance the visibility and reputation of the institution, SHAMP, and the nursing program at local, regional, and national levels. A demonstrated commitment to collegiality, collaboration, and shared governance is essential, along with a strategic mindset that supports the growth, quality, and long-term success of the nursing program.

The position is based in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and will work closely with North Idaho College (NIC), engaging with NIC administration, faculty, and staff to support program operations and collaboration.

Administrative Summary

The Director of the Direct Entry Master’s of Science in Nursing will:

  • Oversee the program development relating to the healthcare and medical professions degree.
  • Attend Health Clinic meetings and promotional events
  • Serve on committees
  • Develop and maintain relationships with academic departments to help in program development.
  • Be responsible for providing operational leadership, inclusive of program development, integration, procedures, staffing and quality improvement.
  • The Director provides leadership, supervision, and oversight of DEMSN faculty and staff, while fostering a supportive and engaging environment for students. Key responsibilities include program development and accreditation, course design and delivery (classroom, online, and clinical), and student advisement to promote academic and professional success. The Director serves as a liaison to university departments such as academic advising, admissions, and financial services, ensuring accurate guidance on policies and procedures. The Director will also cultivate relationships with academic departments to facilitate student progression and inter-program transfer and collaborate with external partners and stakeholders. The position is based in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and will work closely with North Idaho College (NIC), engaging with NIC administration, faculty, and staff to support program operations and collaboration.
  • A 15% base salary stipend will be provided for these administrative responsibilities.

Contingency Description

This administrative appointment or the administrative portion of the faculty appointment is temporary. Employee acknowledges and agrees that in the event there is no longer a need for the administrative assignment, as determined by the University in its sole discretion, University may change this Agreement and remove the administrative salary and/or course release during the contract year and employee may return to their faculty appointment, upon 60 days written notice.

Minimum Education/Degree Required

Listed degree qualification is required at time of application.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have a valid nursing license with a terminal degree (PhD, EdD, DNP, or equivalent) from an accredited college or university that includes course work in nursing, education, administration, or relevant field.
  • Eligible for RN license in State of Idaho
  • Experienced leader with collaborative background.
  • Experience teaching course in nursing and/or other related clinical areas.
  • A minimum of one year’s experience in an administrative position.
  • A minimum of two years of experience teaching in a pre-licensure registered nursing program
  • At least one year of continuous experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care and/or equivalent experience and/or education.
  • Demonstrated experience with curriculum development and revision
  • Experienced researcher.
  • Applicants applying will possess a record of research, teaching performance, and involvement in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral education.
  • Experience managing faculty, staff and program operations.
