Description:
Job Summary
The UHD Law Enforcement Academy Adjunct Instructor presents/instructs Texas Commission Law Enforcement (TCOLE) basic police academy and in-service training courses/topics/curriculum as needed.
Duties
- Presents Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) basic peace officer academy learning objectives and course curriculum
- Plans and uses a variety of teaching methods (lectures, role-play scenarios, hands-on, class engagement, etc.) to assist cadets in meeting course objectives
- Accepts and instructs classes with varied schedules that can include days, evenings, nights, and weekends with various times of the day that can include morning, afternoon, and evenings
- Maintains the rules and regulations of the Academy dictated by the Student Handbook
- Coordinates with Academy staff on all observed cadet performance and conduct issues to maintain discipline in the academy per cadet Handbook rules and regulations
- Can assist with the monitoring of academy exam testing with the Academy Training Coordinator's approval

Qualifications
Required Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Required Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of related job experience
License/Certification:
- TCOLE Instructor Certification is required Documented training or experience to be able to certify as individual as a Subject Matter Expert in a required area of training – certification as an SME is determined by the academy Training Coordinator only per TCOLE
Preferred Qualifications
- Ten (10) years experience as a full-time peace officer is preferred One (1) year of experience teaching in a law enforcement academy or college/university criminal justice program is preferred

- Knowledge of all processes, procedures, and protocols in the Basic Police Officer Program, and of related trends, issues, and accepted practices

- Good technical skills, including proficiency in a variety of computer and software programs and applications
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Good organizational and planning skills
Abilities:
- Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse university community
- Ability to train, inspire, and motivate cadets in a learning-centered environment
Work Location and Physical Demands
Primary Work Location:
- Works in an office environment (2 - 4 hours), classroom, training room, or auditorium (2 - 4 hours)
Physical Demands:
- Working environment will be a combination of inside and outside, in wet and dry conditions, and will include areas that are considered dangerous or hazardous, including a firing range
- Requires maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, or walking for prolonged periods of time, as well as for bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, jumping and climbing; adequate speech, hearing, visual acuity, and ability to distinguish color is required; may be required to carry, push, pull, drag, or hold medium to heavy weight objects of up to 50lbs.
- The use of fingers, both hands, both arms, and both legs is required
- May be required to take offensive and/or defensive action during physical confrontations
- Must have the ability to balance firearms
