Duties and Responsibilities  

  1. *Under administrative direction, the Head Coach is responsible for planning, administering, and evaluating the overall operation of the NCAA Division I Sailing Program including, but not limited to, academic achievement of student-athletes, coaching, recruitment of qualified prospects, hiring and supervision of assistant coaches and other staff assigned to the program, compliance, program management (eligibility, scheduling, travel, budget, equipment), and student-athlete welfare.  
  2. *Assumes full responsibility for ensuring that team performance is competitive in the affiliated conference with the goal of achieving post-season competition.  
  3. *Promotes the institutional position on intercollegiate issues as determined under administrative policy and procedures adopted by the University, Conference, the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) or the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). 
  4. *Organizes, conducts, directs and evaluates practices and intercollegiate competitions.   Teaches necessary skills from the basic fundamentals to modern techniques and strategies of team play to ensure student-athlete development.  Directs the conditioning, training and ensures the safety of student-athletes to ensure proper preparation for intercollegiate athletic competition.
  5. *Develops and implements a strategic recruiting program which evaluates, recruits, and selects qualified prospects who have the ability to compete in the classroom and athletically.  Actively seeks and encourages a diverse group of prospects and assists them through the application process.  Works collaboratively with the staff of the Compliance, Student-Athlete Services, and Student-Athlete Academic Services Offices to qualify and process prospects in a timely and efficient manner.  Makes recurring contacts by phone, written correspondence, off-campus visits and evaluations, and coordination of campus visits.   
  6. *Oversees the academic progress and success of student-athletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility, retention, and graduation.
  7. *Promotes and maintains an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority and prevents other influences that may interfere with their scholastic, athletics, or related interest.
  8. *Promotes and fosters a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members.  Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the water.
  9. *Recommends budget and administers approved allocation.
  10. *In collaboration with the assigned equipment manager, oversees the selection, purchase, fitting, and upkeep of team equipment.
  11. *Exercises functional and administrative supervision for any assigned assistant coaches and other support staff, to include their compliance with, ICSA, NCAA, Conference and University rules and policies which govern the conduct of the Intercollegiate Athletics program.
  12. Prepares data and reports as necessary in support of University requirements. 
  13. *Recommends future competition schedule, personnel, financial and facilities requirements for Sailing to the Athletics Director or designee.  
  14. *Arranges a competitive competition schedule as approved and coordinates travel arrangements needed in support thereof.
  15. Organizes and participates in sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps as approved.
  16. *Confers with the Athletics Director or designee on personnel, financial and facilities requirements for the sports program.
  17. *Actively cultivates and participates in fundraising, sports promotional activities, speaking engagements, and alumni events as requested or approved for the sports program.  Participates in public relations activities that strengthen the relationship between the University and the Community.
  18. Builds, develops and/or manages name, image, and likeness (NIL) initiatives in collaboration with UHMAD that benefits sailing student-athletes.
  19. *Per NCAA Division I Bylaw 11.1.1.1 or as amended, the head coach is presumed to be responsible for the actions of all institutional staff members who report, directly, or indirectly, to the head coach.  The head coach shall promote an atmosphere of compliance within the program and shall monitor the activities of all institutional staff members involved with the program who report, directly or indirectly, to the coach.
  20. *Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
  21. Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.
  22. Maintains collaborative working relationships with administrators, staff, and coaches in the department, other college offices, affiliated Conference offices and peers, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the Athletics Department.
  23. *Knows, recognizes and complies with the laws, policies, rules and regulations governing the University of Hawai‘i and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.   Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if there is reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others, have occurred or will occur.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree and three (3) years of experience coaching sailing at the college or university level; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Knowledge and ability to organize, implement and develop a successful sailing program as played at the Division I collegiate level.
  3. Demonstrated ability to recruit academically and athletically prepared Division I student-athletes.
  4. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  5. Demonstrated ability to establish, foster, and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  6. Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  7. Ability to travel and work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  8. Ability to lead/supervise/evaluate assistant coaches/staff.
  9. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds including but not limited to people of all ages with various ethnicities, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  10. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner.   Required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  11. First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 45 days of employment start date.
  12. Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  13. Computer, cell phone, social media and sailing related software technology competency.


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Successful Division I sailing coaching experience.
  2. Knowledge and understanding of Division I sport specific program and NCAA rules.
  3. Ability to understand and work effectively in Hawai‘i’s multi-cultural society.
