Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Entry level physical plant management position.
  • *Assists the building manager of Hamilton Library and occasionally others, with a variety of one-time and routine tasks related to maintaining the Hamilton building. May supervise student assistants in performing these tasks.
  • Conducts inventories and surveys of library physical equipment and property, maintains room inventories, organizes storage areas and sorts shelving parts. 
  • Moves or supervises the moves of library furniture and equipment.  Maintains library equipment.  Supervises shelving contract work as necessary  
  • *Regularly surveys building conditions and notes items and/or conditions that require repair, replacement, or professional attention.  Prepares and tracks building repair work orders sent to Facilities Management.
  • Carries out special projects involving planning and implementation of moves of staff, equipment, and/or library materials.  Provides coordination for the disposal of surplus, obsolete, or broken equipment and furniture.
  • Performs and/or supervises regularly scheduled graffiti removal from library furniture, monitors for mold and insect infestations, and monitors air-conditioning ducts for dust accumulation.
  • Coordinates assistance with Preservation staff to move material related to the recovery and restoration of library collections.  May occasionally assist in treating damaged library materials as required.
  • *Helps in the supervision of contract security guards.  May be required to open and/or close the building.
  • *Performs building air-conditioning and ceiling leak inspections at scheduled times (holidays, weekends) when the building is closed.  Communicates the results of these inspections to Library Administration personnel and other appropriate individuals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Professional Work Experience 
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Social Science or related field and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for building or preservation management work; or equivalent education/training or experience.
 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
  • Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in building maintenance and preservation management demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with building safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the operation of a public building.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
 Equivalencies 
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications  

  • Experience in preparation of inventories and reports.    
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and implement special projects related to moving staff and equipment.    
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of clerical and/or student assistants in the conduct of routine building tasks.    
  • Physical ability to stand, bend, squat or kneel, reach shelves above eye level, and lift and carry 50 pounds.    
  • Able to work in conditions that contain dust, mold and/or dampness.    
  • Ability to work nights, weekends and/or holidays, as necessary.

Desirable Qualifications 

  • One year of previous experience working with building maintenance.    
  • Previous supervisory experience.
