Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

  • MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:** $5,981 - $6,215/Mon.

Duties

Performs research in cosmology, creating galaxy catalogs, estimating photometric redshifts, analyzing the resulting large scale structure (LSS) data along with Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), with special emphasis on the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, CMB anomalies, and spatial statistical and machine learning techniques. Improves existing analysis techniques with convolutional networks and transformers. Maintains computers used for research. Leads scientific projects, mentoring students, and authoring papers for scientific publication.

  • EDUCATION** PhD from an accredited college or university in A

stronomy or Physics.

  • EXPERIENCE** Three to five (3-5) years of experience in creating galaxy catalogs, photometric redshifts, statistical analysis of CMB and LSS data sets, research in cosmology, using image processing software, and computational techniques. Experience with machine learning techniques, including convolutional neural networks, generative networks, large language models and transformers.
  • KNOWLEDGE** Proficient knowledge of current research in cosmology, computational and statistical techniques, Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, Dark Energy, and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO). Knowledge of machine learning techniques, including convolutional neural networks, generative networks, large language models and transformers.
  • ABILITIES and SKILLS** Proficient ability to code for Anisotropies in the Microwave Background (CAMB), CosmoMC, or equivalent, proficiency in Python/Numpy, and C. Proficient with data bases and photos packages, or equivalent. Proficient in maintenance of Linux and OS X systems.

Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
