Overview

Under the direction of the Program Director/Manager and Medical Director, the Transport EMT is accountable for responding to all assigned transports in the most appropriate and efficient manner, providing high standards of patient care while ensuring a safe and hazard free environment. The transport EMT is responsible for safe ground ambulance transport of patients. The transport EMT contributes to overall patient care in areas of patient assessment, treatment, packaging and transport. This position interacts throughout the facility internally, and with patients and their families externally. The transport EMT must also possess excellent interpersonal skills as s/he is instrumental in providing community outreach and education. The transport EMT is responsible for carrying out the mission and goals of UF Health Jacksonville assuring that safety remains the highest priority throughout the transport continuum. The transport EMT will be expected to assist in the trauma center and emergency department when not actively involved in transport as needed. The transport EMT will operate all hospital owned vehicles IAW all local and state standards

Responsibilities

Provides safe transport of patients under the direction of a paramedic or registered nurse according to established transport protocols and standing orders signed by the Medical Director.

  • Safely drives ambulance and performs EMT assistive medical care at the direction of the attendantparamedic, registered nurse, or medical director.
  • Performs scheduled observations and monitoring activities according to unit/department/patient population specific standards.
  • Recognizes and reports abnormal findings and changes in patient condition to the attendant paramedic or registered nurse.

Contributes to continuity of care:

  • Implements patient care activities as assigned according to standards of care and practice.
  • Reinforces patient and family education.
  • Operates and troubleshoots equipment as indicated for patient care needs.
  • Documents patient care according to policies, procedures and protocols.

Facilitates efficient daily operations :

  • Organizes and reprioritizes work based on patients' needs, available resources, and unit requirements
  • Follows hospital policies and procedures and programprotocols.
  • Supports the philosophy of EMS and the organizational structure.
  • Supports compliance with hospital accreditation, state licensure, and other external accrediting agencyrequirements.
  • Reviews department work load to maintain current working knowledge of job responsibilities.

  • Reviews program goals and directs daily work efforts toward satisfying those goals.
  • Practices cost-effective use of personnel, equipment and supplies.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling to meet program and service needs
  • Performs duties such as navigation, radio communication, obstacle avoidance and other EMSrelated duties
  • Represents program and hospital and coordinates public relations events and educational in-services forsurrounding Counties.
  • Inspects vehicle daily; insures that vehicle is clean, fully equipped and in proper operating condition and incompliance with all state and local laws.
  • Makes up stretcher and cleans inside of vehicle after each call.
  • Responds to mission requests in the prescribed timeframe.

Cont ributes to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff by following policies, procedures, and protocols.

  • Responsible for safely transporting patient and medical equipment
  • Identifies patients at risk for injury and participates in instituting measures to prevent/reduce the risk.
  • Adheres to AGE APPROPRIATE PROTOCOLS in order to ensure patient safety based on developmental needs.
  • Contributes to prevention of infectious diseases among employees, patients, and visitors by adhering toInfection Control policies and procedures.
  • Completes employee accident reports and contributes information to complete patient safety reports.
  • Reports environmental safety hazards, including damaged and broken equipment.
  • Responds to mission requests timely.
  • Ensures emergency readiness, and initiates timely emergency measures as appropriate according to roleresponsibilities.
  • Ensures that the transport vehicle is serviceable by checking all warning devices and overall serviceabilityof the vehicle, this includes but not limited to: fluid levels, fuel levels, emergency warning devices, lights,etc.

Participates in the achievement of unit/department fiscal goals.

  • Utilizes equipment and supplies appropriately to meet patient care needs.
  • Contributes to capture of patient charges and revenue generation.
  • Operates and troubleshoots equipment as indicated for patient care needs
  • Complies with programs as defined in hospital policies and procedures such as medication administration process, endotracheal intubation (both orotracheal), surgical cricothyroidotomy, thoracostomy, transport ventilator use, rapid sequence induction administration, safe use of restraints, use of I.V. infusion pumps, spinal immobilization techniques, and communication among caregivers
  • Communicates in a professional manner with other members of the health care team.Serves as a patient advocate by providing compassionate care, which is individualized to meet the special needs of each patient.

Demonstrates professional development and accountability.

  • Complies with work rules (e.g. dress code, time and attendance, break time, personal use of phones/computers, etc.)
  • Takes responsibility for obtaining departmental/hospital information and incorporates change into practice.
  • Maintains competence and continues development of professional/clinical knowledge case through continuing education.
  • Completes mandatory in-services/requirements, competency updates and self-evaluation for evaluationprocess.
  • Reviews unit/department communication to maintain current working knowledge of job responsibilities.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participates in on-going education to expand and enhance professional development as required by
  • hospital guidelines.
  • Consistently demonstrates knowledge of Regulatory Agency Standards by incorporating them into daily practice.
  • Demonstrates clinical skill in patient care management.
  • Complies with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to function in a small environment and be proportionate in build.
  • Must be able to see hazards and be able to maneuver safely around the vehicle.
  • Be able to lift, push, pull 250 pounds or more with assistance.
  • Maintain a "clean" driving record and operate all hospital vehicles IAW all local and states standards.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • High School Diploma or GED; Associate's degree Preferred

Required Licensure/Certifications

  • Florida EMT Certification
  • BLS from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Candidate must have 2 or more years of driving experience and must be insurable by the hospital's business auto insurance carrier.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License
  • Certification of completion of a Florida approved Emergency Vehicle Operations driving course(NAPD or EVOC) must be completed within 30 days of date of hire/transfer.
  • Within six months of hire or transfer: Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Advanced Medical Life Support, FEMA IS 100, FEMA IS 200, Emergency Vehicle Operations Course, UF Health Jacksonville DECON training.

Preferred Certification/Licensure

  • National Registry EMT

Required Experience

  • Less than 1 year of EMS or healthcare related field

Preferred experience

  • Over 2-3 years field experience in an active 911 Emergency Medical Service or healthcare field

Necessary Skills

  • Ability to learn and adapt to new equipment.
  • Ability to work in highly stressful situation.
  • Customer relations and organization skills are essential.
  • Adheres to Hospital Policy, and the Florida Department of Emergency Medical Services guidelines in providing patient care.
  • Familiar with Advanced Life Support patient care equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pathophysiology related to cardiac, pulmonary, renal and neurological systems.
  • Functional understanding of communications equipment including: telephone, radios and recording equipment desired. Some knowledge of navigational terms desired.
