JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position serves as one of the Career Advisors for the Levin College of Law. The Assistant Director and Advisor assumes leadership for coordination and delivery of advising for students and graduates of the College of Law. The Assistant Director and Advisor is also responsible for assisting with all aspects of the administration, program planning and implementation of the office of Career and Professional Development for J.D. students, LL.M. students, and graduates of the law school. This includes, but is not limited to, helping students develop short-term and long-term career and professional goals; choosing courses and experiential programs so that they may graduate in a timely manner, and maximizing their law school experience. The Assistant Director and Advisor will help students adopt best practices to succeed in law school and the legal profession. Successful candidates will have strong written and oral communication skills, understanding of the legal profession and legal career paths, and the ability to work in a team environment.

Provide Career Advising to Students and Graduates
Administer and independently manage counseling services for students and graduates of the law school. Advise J.D. and LL.M. students in all aspects of their job search activities including resume drafting, cover letter preparation, interview skills development and the identification of potential employers; and assisting students in identifying the areas of career interest and work environments most consistent with their personal and professional needs. Counsel law graduates seeking employment to change jobs or career direction and assist them in identifying opportunities in their current or newly chosen areas of employment, and assist graduates in their resume preparation, job search, interviewing and networking activities.

Judicial Clerkship Program Administration

Design and implement judicial clerkship programming, events, and workshops. Perform research to identify opportunities and conduct targeted outreach. Design and implement programs and processes to track clerkship opportunities and identify and advise students on strategy and application materials. Create and edit judicial clerkship resources.

Monitor Student Progress
Use and refine appropriate electronic databases to monitor and track student progress and ensure students are on track to graduate in a timely manner, pass the bar exam, and pursue summer and permanent employment. Regularly review student progress, identify students who need support, and collaborate with others to determine appropriate outreach and support strategies for those students.

Develop Initiatives to Support Faculty Advising and Student Self-Advising
Support and coordinate advising by faculty members and empower students to engage in self-advising. These initiatives will include the development of training sessions and the preparation of printed and website materials designed to facilitate student self-advising and to assist faculty in advising students and identifying students at risk. Attend and support student life events as needed.

EXPECTED SALARY:

$75,000-80,000



REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the assistant director’s area of responsibility and three years of experience; or a bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor’s area of responsibility and five years of relevant experience.



PREFERRED:

Juris Doctor and legal practice experience of at least three years or equivalent knowledge of potential career paths for law students, including knowledge of private and non-profit law firms, judicial clerkships, government practice, and in-house legal positions.

Strong emotional intelligence and listening skills, as evidenced by training in education, counseling, or mental health; a record of pro bono work with vulnerable populations; or other professional development training.

Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to counsel one-on-one, to lead large group programs, and to develop website and printed material for both students and faculty members.
The ability to use and refine electronic databases to monitor student progress.

A proven track record of creative problem-solving and success working in a team environment.
