Context of Job

Academic Coaching and Tutoring (ACT) provides tutoring and other academic support of the UD community. ACT’s mission is to empower students to develop academic skills and strategies that will pave the way for future success.

Under the general direction of the ACT Director, the Academic Success Coach II is responsible for promoting a positive and successful learning experience to increase student retention, success and degree completion. The Academic Success Coach II facilitates one-on-one meetings with undergraduate students to provide holistic academic support as they move toward their academic, personal and professional goals.

In addition, the Academic Success Coach II is responsible for program design development, planning, and works with the Director of ACT to propose new initiatives, set goals and propose solutions to coaching issues and other University-wide student success issues that affect the quality of services provided for all students.

In collaboration with other units and colleges across campus, the Academic Success Coach II oversees projects and initiatives that extend beyond coaching support. The Academic Success Coach II is expected to assist and serve as a consultant to programs and events for new students and supports university-wide programs such as New Student Orientation, First Year Seminar, etc. Additionally, the Academic Success Coach II assists with program development, management, evaluation/assessment, workshops, presentations and outreach within budgeted resources.

Major Responsibilities

  • Provide high-touch, individualized support to a student caseload guiding them to develop academic skills and strategies to ensure success and retention. One-on-one meetings held in person and remotely, as needed.
  • Provide behavioral coaching for academic success, including time management, goal setting and learning strategies as well as encouragement and positive reinforcement. Assist students with the challenges of balancing academic life with external commitments and situations that may interfere with their ability to be successful.
  • Responsible for development, planning, facilitation, and assessment of special projects related to the success of UD students including but not limited to Skilmod courses, NSO, Website design and enhancements, etc. as assigned.
  • Assess individual student needs and make appropriate referrals. Collaborate with students’ assigned academic advisor(s) to help student understand and develop degree progression strategies and timely graduation plan. Maintain communication and collaborate with other departments and academic units to support student success. Provide information on and targeted intervention strategies for students identified as at-risk.
  • Monitor students’ academic progress, update student records and maintain summary reports.
  • Develop and implement effective strategies and early outreach plans.
  • Participate in outreach activities (e.g., admission events, resource fairs).
  • Teach courses related to the mission of ACT (SkilMods, UNIV 101).
  • Responsible for the development, planning, facilitation and assessment of initiatives related to student success workshops.
  • Assist with training new Academic Success Coaches, including creating and managing content for trainings, and providing ongoing support.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, special education, psychology or related discipline (Masters preferred) and four years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of student issues in higher education (e.g., access, transition, retention, success).
  • Ability to identify problems, analyze information and implement solutions to a diverse student population with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
  • Experience in working with at-risk student populations.
  • Experience in developing a project budget and managing allocated resources.
  • Experience and knowledge of study skills development and a wide range of learning strategies.
  • Capable of taking initiative, assuming responsibility and handling confidential information with discretion.
  • High energy and enthusiasm for working with students individually and in groups.
  • Excellent oral, written and communication skills, including strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build working relationships in a diverse community.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to work under pressure, handle frequent interruptions and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient computer skills including use of presentation software, Microsoft Office, Qualtrics and student information/success tracking platforms preferred.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, apply and follow policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment.
