At UConn Health, the Assistant Director of Pharmacy - Ambulatory Services assists in the planning, development, and administration of ambulatory pharmacy services. This role provides operational and strategic leadership for ambulatory pharmacy programs, outpatient clinics, and centralized services, with a focus on access, quality, service excellence, regulatory compliance, and financial stewardship.

The Assistant Director supports the Director of Pharmacy by standardizing workflows, optimizing productivity, enhancing patient and provider experiences, and strengthening partnerships with ambulatory practices and interdisciplinary teams. The position supports the growth and sustainability of ambulatory pharmacy services in alignment with UConn Health's mission and strategic priorities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Reports to the Director of Pharmacy or designee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Supervises pharmacy managers, pharmacists, technicians, and other assigned ambulatory pharmacy staff. Provides operational leadership and guidance to managers overseeing outpatient pharmacies, clinic-based pharmacy services, and centralized programs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Assists in the planning, development, coordination, and administration of ambulatory pharmacy services across UConn Health.

Identify and implement opportunities to enhance operations, standardize workflows, improve productivity, and elevate patient and provider experiences.

Monitor operational performance and develop action plans to meet productivity and quality benchmarks.

Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and placement of pharmacy staff to ensure the delivery of high-quality services across ambulatory pharmacy operations and works closely with affiliating physician practices.

Collaborate with pharmacy leadership to promote service excellence and patient satisfaction across ambulatory clinics and centralized programs.

Provides operational leadership, direction, and support to assigned pharmacy managers to ensure adherence to care delivery standards and departmental policies.

Resolve escalated patient and customer concerns and act as a liaison between ambulatory practices and pharmacy programs.

Support staff development, engagement, and accountability through mentoring, goal-setting, and professional growth opportunities.

Assist in program and service development to anticipate patient and provider needs and support sustainable growth.

Partner with finance and leadership to develop and manage budgets, optimize resources, and ensure efficient daily operations.

Supports pharmacy efficiency and customer service considerations during the development and implementation of ambulatory growth initiatives.

Assists in ensuring compliance with applicable policies, professional standards, and local, state, and federal regulations, including State Board of Pharmacy, DEA, The Joint Commission, Department of Health, CMS, Medicare Part B billing, third-party payer, and PBM requirements, and the 340B Drug Pricing Program.

Prepare reports, recommendations, and presentations for senior leadership on strategic objectives and performance outcomes.

Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFCATIONS REQUIRED:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of ambulatory pharmacy operations and pharmacy practice standards.

Demonstrated ability to lead managers and professional staff in a complex healthcare environment.

Strong operational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and pharmacy compliance requirements.

Ability to manage budgets, analyze financial and productivity data, and implement performance improvement strategies.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.

Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams, physicians, and external partners.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited college or school of pharmacy.

Current Pharmacist license in the State of Connecticut.

Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in pharmacy practice, including leadership or management experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).

Completion of PGY1 pharmacy residency or equivalent experience.

Completion of a PGY2 residency in ambulatory care or a related specialty.

Experience in ambulatory or outpatient pharmacy services within an academic medical center or health system.

Experience with centralized prior authorization programs, specialty pharmacy services, or clinic-integrated pharmacy models.

Knowledge of 340B Drug Pricing Program operations and compliance.

At least two (2) years of supervisory experience of professional staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbents in this class may be required to work on-site at UConn Health facilities and affiliated ambulatory locations. The position may require occasional travel between sites and work outside of normal business hours to meet operational and organizational needs.

SCHEDULE: Full time, 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, schedule includes evenings, weekends and holidays as assigned, on-call responsibilities for after-hours coverage as assigned, 30-minute unpaid meal break.
