UCONN HEALTH JOHN DEMPSEY (JDH) 2026 NURSING STUDENT SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The JDH Nursing Student Summer Internship Program is a paid, learning experience designed to provide students, who have completed 1 year of clinical (2 semesters), experiences that will enhance their knowledge, clinical skills, and self-confidence. These experiences have been shown to ease student transition to professional nursing practice after graduation. Participation in this program is also an opportunity to become acquainted with John Dempsey Hospital nursing. Students must participate in the program's entire 8 weeks.

The NSIP program is a 8 week, work-study immersion experience for 36-40 hours per week.

• Week #1 May 29 - June 4: Attend New Employee and General Nursing orientations (40 hours)

• Weeks #2 - 4: June 5 - June 25: Complete unit-based orientation and work in Nursing Care Assistant role

• Weeks #5 - 8: June 26 - July 23: Work alongside specially trained RN Resource Nurse(s) on assigned unit performing specific nurse related duties (restrictions apply).

• Week #9 (July 24) and onward: If successfully completes the program, the student can continue working in the nursing assistant role for remainder of summer and during the school year and semester breaks.

SUMMER 2026 NSIP STUDENtS MAY BE ASSIGNED TO ONE OF THESE UNITS:

• Medicine/Oncology

• Surgery/Orthopedics 5

• Medicine 3 Unit

• Medicine 4 Unit

Additional rotations to areas of interest may be arranged on a case-by-case basis. Every attempt is made to match a student's past clinical experience and areas of practice preference when making unit assignments. The John Dempsey Hospital staff is committed to making each student's internship an enriching and growing professional experience.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVIES:

The Nursing Student Intern will:

• Provide direct patient care and gain experience in performing clinical nursing skills under the direct supervision of RN Resource Nurses

• Increase clinical competence and clinical decision-making by relating nursing theory to practice and using evidence-based practice research whenever possible.

• Refine communication skills by collaborating with patients, family members and other health care team members.

• Develop professional relationships with unit staff.

• Demonstrate increased professional accountability.

• Assume responsibility for seeking new learning experiences.

• Perform the nursing care assistant role expectations.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY AND PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

To have your application materials reviewed, all of the following requirements must be met:

• BSN or ASN nursing student with a projected graduation of Winter 2026 or Spring 2027

• Be in good academic standing at one's school (Preferred GPA 3.2 or better)

• Successful completion of Fundamentals Nursing Skills laboratory and two semesters of clinical experience (by start of program - May 29, 2026)

• Maintain current AHA CPR/BLS certification throughout the Internship period

• What specifically interests you about the specialty/unit (Med/Surg Onc, Surg/Ortho, Med 3 or Med 4 unit) you are applying to?

• Current resume with a summary of clinical experiences

• Unofficial or official transcript from your school of nursing (SON), including your Fall Semester 2025 grades.

• If selected an official transcript will be required.

• One letter of recommendation from Nursing Faculty at your SON, preferably from the student's Clinical Faculty

Hourly Rate: $16.94
