UConn Health is searching for a highly skilled Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant with experience caring for stroke patient. This position is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in delivery of direct clinical care services. This highly desirable position will work in In-Patient Stroke Service in Farmington, CT

WORK SCHEDULE : This is a full time salaried position, 12 hour shifts; includes weekends and holidays; nights, 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., 30 minute unpaid meal break, must have flexibility to accommodate departmental needs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED : Works under the general direction of the Director of Stroke Service and the Program Director for Advanced Practice Staff.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Considerable knowledge of stroke and neurologic evaluation
Considerable knowledge of theory, principles, and practices of advanced practice and therapeutic models in area of specialty (Stroke/Neurology)
Considerable knowledge of anatomy and physiology;
Knowledge of pharmacology as it relates to advanced practice; knowledge of different disciplines and disease states
Skill in performing specialty specific invasive procedures , i.e. LP; NGT insertion and removal.
Considerable interpersonal skills
Oral and written communication skills
Ability to effectively assess physical and psychosocial conditions
Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
Ability to work independently;
Ability to work under pressure
Ability to formulate appropriate treatment plans

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :
Evaluates, assesses patient illness/injuries.
Completes thorough history and physical exanimations; and special examinations-focused neurologic exam
Formulates and implement treatment and therapeutics plans .
Independently conducts daily hospital and progress notes
Responds to Stroke Alerts and provide initial care management decisions -in-patient and ED.
ED and inpatient consults
Management of inpatients and DOC patients
Intervenes in crisis situations or patient deterioration.
Provides routine and illness care.
Orders medications; orders diagnostic tests and evaluates results.
Assumes responsibility for patient follow-up, coordination, facilitates patient referrals to appropriate providers; and other health care disciplines as necessary.
Maintains continuity of care thru facilitation of out-patient follow up visits
Implements discharge planning and completes discharge summaries
Maintains patient medical records.
Fields patient/family calls at night
May develop policies/procedures; participates in or designs changes in the system of care delivery; may participate in clinical research; provides patient counseling/education; participates in medical student and health professional teaching; acts as a clinical consultant to peers and other health care professionals.
Participates in patient safety and quality assurance initiatives
Participates in research studies as applicable
Precepts APP students and orients new APP staff.
Maintains active participation in own continued education and professional development
Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING :
Must possess and maintain a licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Connecticut or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, in the specified specialty
APRN - Registered Nurse, and completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program; or have a Bachelor's degree, and have completed a two year accredited and approved Nurse Practitioner Certification program. Possess or be eligible for a license to practice in the State of Connecticut. Must be a Certified Advance Practice Nurse. Preferred AG-ACNP/ACNP certification.
PA - Master's degree and completion of a two years accredited and approved physician assistant certification program. Incumbents must possess and maintain licensure to practice in the State of Connecticut.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT :
Must possess and maintain American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS), Advance Cardiac Life Support certification for healthcare providers.
Other CPR/AED credentials may be accepted at hire but incumbents will be required to obtain American Heart Association (AHA) BLS & ACLS certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain through employment.
Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, (NIHSS) certification (may complete training during orientation).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Neurology and stroke experience
Two (2) years Surgical Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner experience with at least one (1) year of neurological experience.
AG-ACNP/ACNP certification
