This class is accountable for providing laboratory testing services to the hospital and community, primarily in the areas of chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation. This position will work primarily in the Core Lab within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the UConn John Dempsey Hospital located in Farmington, CT.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives direction from the Core Supervisor, Laboratory Director or Manager, Core Laboratory Division Director, or Department Head.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May exercise technical and functional supervision over technical and administrative support staff.
SCHEDULE: Full time 80 hours every two weeks, evenings, Monday - Friday, 11:00 pm to 7:30 am, rotating weekends and holidays as required, may work 1st and 2nd shift to accommodate departmental needs per contract, 30-minute unpaid meal break, may be required to stay at or return to work during public health incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as required in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or work outside the normal assigned duties during an incident and/or emergency.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Conducts blood bank, chemistry, hematological, coagulation, bacteriological, immunological, and serological examinations of blood, urine, gastric contents, spinal, amniotic fluid and other body fluids, exudates, and transudates.
May obtain blood specimens from clients for examinations.
May work in other disciplines of the lab.
Performs general laboratory maintenance including preparation of solutions, prepares slides.
Performs antimicrobial susceptibility testing/level determinations, antibody titters, and antigen detection to aid in the diagnosis of infectious diseases.
Reports test results; may interpret tests.
Assists physicians with procedures.
Checks specimen labels for appropriateness/accuracy.
Performs florescence polarization and immunoassay.
Keeps records and inventory.
Assists in preparing the department monthly report.
Maintains patient confidentiality.
Implements and documents quality control procedures and instrument preventive maintenance.
Participates in training of residents, students, fellows.
Performs other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITY:
Considerable knowledge of various laboratory disciplines i.e.: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, biology, bacteriology, microbiology, serology, urinalysis, radioimmunoassay, etc.
Considerable knowledge of laboratory instrumentation including computers.
Knowledge of standard clinical laboratory procedures including safety practices.
Knowledge of scientific methods.
Interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.
Skill in performing mathematical computations.
Ability to work quickly and accurately under stressful conditions.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
General Experience:
Medical Technologist 1 : Bachelor's degree in medical technology, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or related field.
Substitution Allowed : Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or related specialty from the ASCP Board of Certification or other acceptable certifying board may substitute for the bachelor's degree.
Medical Technologist 2: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or a related field, and two (2) years of Medical Technology experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess and maintain certification during employment as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or related specialty from the ASCP Board of Certification or other acceptable certifying board.
Must pass a visual color sampling test.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE:
Experience with system software i.e.: Epic - Beaker , LIS, Siemens
Experience with other systems i.e.: Sysmex XN3000, IL TOP550, Abbott Alinity ci analyzer, Abbott Accelerator Automated Processing System, Rapid Point 500, Sysmex UN-3000, Advance OsmoPro Max
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbents in this class are exposed to disagreeable odors, infectious materials, radioactive, toxic, and other hazardous substances.
Work requires visual strain due to prolonged/extended close examination of specimens and use of a microscope (light or fluorescent).
Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, and walking.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Ability to bend and reach in order to operate instrumentation
