Job Summary:

The University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU SOM) seeks an innovative and collaborative Director of Education and Innovation to serve under the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education/Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Designated Institutional Official (ACGME DIO). The GME Director of Education and Innovation will provide leadership, oversight, and strategic direction for the institution’s residency and fellowship training programs. The Director will assist the DIO in ensuring compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements while fostering an environment of continuous educational innovation through faculty development, resident and fellow curricular development, and improvement in feedback, evaluation, and assessment of mastery.

In collaboration with the DIO, program directors, faculty, and hospital leadership, the Director will lead initiatives to enhance competency-based medical education (CBME), explore non-time-based training models, implement other emerging innovations in graduate medical education, and assure best practices in medical education and faculty development are practiced on campus. This role is critical in advancing CUSOM’s reputation as a leader in transformational medical education and ensuring that its residency and fellowship graduates are role models of the well-rounded physician leader, prepared to excel in modern healthcare environments.

Supervision Received:

This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education/ACGME Designated Institutional Official.

Supervision Exercised:

This position has no direct supervision; however, will chair the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) Education Subcommittee, consisting of 20-30 volunteer members of the GME community, including program directors, associate directors, program coordinators, and housestaff members.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Administration

  • Develop and implement institutional policies and best practices around curricular design, feedback, evaluation and assessment.
  • Lead existing signature GME educational efforts including ongoing faculty development; bi-annual new PD/APD onboarding; the IHQSE-led Chief Resident leadership course; the annual GME Leadership Retreat; the GME Data Dashboard Project.
  • Develop centralized (GME) educational offerings and resources while overseeing faculty development initiatives to enhance teaching, mentorship, and evaluation skills among GME educators.

Accreditation & Compliance

  • Support program directors in preparing for ACGME site visits, self-studies, and accreditation reviews as it relates to faculty development, curriculum, feedback, and evaluation
  • Graduate Medical Education Innovation & Competency-Based Training
  • Drive the implementation of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) and individualized learning models, ensuring alignment with national trends and ACGME initiatives.
  • Foster innovation in graduate medical education by developing personalized learning plans, flexible training pathways, and advanced assessment tools in collaboration with faculty and national partners.

Resident & Fellow Development

  • Champion resident and fellow well-being, belonging, and professional development by collaborating on coaching initiatives, fostering mentorship, and integrating leadership, research, and interprofessional education into GME programs.

Faculty Development & Mentorship

  • Collaborate with faculty development leadership to enhance GME faculty teaching skills, promoting modern instructional methods, formative assessments, and effective feedback strategies to support trainee growth.

Work Location:

Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule as needed for teaching and in-person meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Assistant Professor:

  • Terminal degree (MD, DO, PhD, EdD, or equivalent) with substantial experience in medical education.
  • Prior working experience in curriculum development, faculty mentoring, and program evaluation

Associate Professor:

  • Terminal degree (MD, DO, PhD, EdD, or equivalent) with substantial experience in medical education.
  • Prior working experience in curriculum development, faculty mentoring, and program evaluation

Professor:

  • Terminal degree (MD, DO, PhD, EdD, or equivalent) with substantial experience in medical education.
  • Prior working experience in curriculum development, faculty mentoring, and program evaluation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in graduate medical education leadership (e.g., Program Director, Associate Program Director, GME Administrator, or Faculty Leader).
  • Experience designing or implementing competency-based medical education (CBME) models or other innovative training frameworks.
  • National involvement in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), or other graduate medical education leadership organizations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Background in medical education research
  • In-depth knowledge of ACGME accreditation, program development, and competency-based education.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills with a track record of implementing educational innovations.
  • Experience in curriculum development, faculty mentoring, and program evaluation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with institutional leaders, hospital administration, faculty, and trainees.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Assistant Professor: $75,000- $135,000, representing an estimated 0.3 FTE salary support plus benefits. For individuals with a current 1.0 FTE salary between $250,000 and $450,000 annually, this range reflects a good faith estimate based on current compensation levels. The final offer will depend on the individual’s uncapped 1.0 FTE salary.
