About The Department

The Development Innovation Lab at the University of Chicago uses the tools of economics to develop innovations with the potential to benefit millions of people in low- and middle-income countries. It was founded and is led by Nobel laureate Michael Kremer.

Job Summary

The job provides business support within established procedures regarding office and location support activities. Identifies, enhances, and follows specific processes and procedures to maximize the efficiencies for which the support is being provided by working autonomously within established procedures and practices. Ensures the correct functioning of facilities, office and/or business support services.

The Development Innovation Lab is searching for a Part-Time Transcriber to support University Professor Michael Kremer, 2019 Nobel Laureate. The position plays a critical role in facilitating the communications of the Professor including memos, emails, notes, and talking points.

Responsibilities

  • Transcribes voice recorded messages to written text.
  • Creates and maintains accurate records.
  • Handles time-sensitive materials.
  • Protects and maintains confidentiality of information.
  • Provides administrative support for a leader. Stays informed of activities relating to programs and initiatives, apprising the leader of issues when deemed necessary. Coordinates information flow from leader's office.
  • Triages emails and telephone calls for action. Resolves mostly routine and some complex inquiries.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Work Experience

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Experience

  • Previous experience with transcription.
  • Experience with extensive email communication.
  • Excellent knowledge of English grammar and spelling.

  • Proficiency with computers and MS Office applications, the Internet, Dropbox, etc.
  • Attentive listening and written communication skills.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • High-level of accuracy and sharp attention to detail.
  • Strong critical and analytical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain organizational and literacy skills.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills with the ability to manage a heavy workload, competing priorities, and tight deadlines.
  • Fast and accurate typing speed is a must.
  • English fluency (must listen, speak, read, and write fluently).
  • Strong command over language (both formal and colloquial), grammar, and punctuation are needed.
  • Ability to search for industry-specific information and a good working knowledge of computers and software programs are required by a skilled transcriptionist to perform fool-proof transcription.
  • A high level of confidentiality and discretion.
  • Work effectively with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate and respond to future needs.
  • Ability to use appropriate resources and follow an issue through to resolution.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and make effective decisions.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid; work may generally be done from home but may work from the DIL office in DC if desired and dependent on the Faculty’s schedule.
  • May be asked to work from the office on occasion.
