About The Department

Student Counseling (SC) is a unit within Student Wellness, which is a part of Campus and Student Life. SC provides mental health care to eligible students and their eligible dependents. Mental health services include: diagnostic assessments; crisis assessment and intervention; individual, couples, and/or group psychotherapy; medication management; academic skills counseling; and referral services. SC staff provides consultation to University of Chicago faculty, staff, and administrators, and outreach/education to the campus community. In its care for students, SC employs a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, supports a psychology training program, and serves as a training rotation site for psychiatry residents.

Job Summary

Student Counseling within the Student Wellness Center is in need of a clinical psychologist who can assist with conducting triage and initial appointments. Provide direct clinical mental health services to eligible University of Chicago students. Provide consultation, outreach, and support to various members of the campus community.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts triage, clinical diagnostic evaluation, and assessment of patients, including urgent-care/crisis evaluations.
  • Provides goal-focused, time-limited individual, couples, and group psychotherapy.
  • Provides emergency and crisis intervention services, including scheduled daytime.
  • Maintains timely and complete electronic documentation as appropriate.
  • Provides consultation, training, and outreach to members of the University of Chicago community both during and after hours.
  • Participates in clinical and administrative staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Provides clinical supervision of trainees as needed and as appropriate
  • Exercises discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations.
  • Reviews, analyzes, interprets, and/or adheres to federal and state laws, rules, regulations, Code of Ethics, policies, and procedures as related to clinical psychology.
  • Provides mental healthcare through assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, treatment, monitoring, and/or referral.
  • Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats individuals with mental, emotional, behavioral, or nervous system or conditions, including but not limited to developmental disabilities, alcoholism, substance abuse, and disorders of habit or conduct.
  • Analyzes the effectiveness of counseling or treatments and the accuracy and completeness of diagnoses, modifying plans or diagnoses as necessary.
  • Interprets client treatment plans based on research, clinical experience, and client histories.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Doctoral degree in psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) from an APA approved graduate program.

Experience:

  • Working in a university counseling setting.
  • Providing evidence-based, time-limited psychotherapy.
  • Expertise providing services to under-represented populations and first generation university students.
  • Advanced training or experience with college age or young adult populations.

Certifications:

  • Licensed or license-eligible as a clinical psychologist in Illinois.

Technical Skills Or Knowledge:

  • Review, analyze, interpret, and/or prepare federal and state laws, rules, regulations, Code of Ethics, policies and procedures as related to social work.

Preferred Competencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations.
  • Interest in helping students to overcome behavioral and emotional obstacles to peak academic performance.
