Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Digital Accessibility, the Digital Accessibility Graduate Assistant will assist with various accessibility initiatives and projects and seek out digital accessibility opportunities for improvement and awareness. This is an excellent opportunity to gain marketable skills on the important role accessibility plays in making digital content available and more inclusive for everyone.  

 

Hours per Week

25 hours per week, M-F, with a flexible schedule.

 

College/Department Overview

The UCO Digital Accessibility Team is seeking a digital accessibility Graduate Assistant. The Digital Accessibility team provides accessibility guidance, training, recommendations, and consultations for academic technology, course materials and digital communication, and other initiatives.

The Digital Accessibility Team is part of the Center for eLearning and Connected Environments (CeCE). 

 

Department Specific Job Functions

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Digital Accessibility, provide digital accessibility support as needed. 
  • Communicate and interact with Digital Accessibility Coalition (DAC) team members to build and maintain a robust relationship. 
  • Work in partnership with Digital Accessibility Coalition members to implement projects and achieve accessibility goals. 
  • Assist with Digital Accessibility micro-credential planning, communication, scheduling, participant progress and additional administrative duties. 
  • Provide accessible document creation and remediation assistance. 
  • Collaborate on delivering accessibility services to ensure customer service is maintained at the highest level. 
  • Development of digital accessibility training and informational resources. 
  • Monitor and advise on developing trends and news regarding digital accessibility trends. 
  • Utilize accessibility data and information to identify areas of concern. 
  • Assist in performing usability and accessibility tests including user experience observation, manual and automated testing, keyboard navigation, and assistive technology validation; capture data and create reports. 
  • Perform other related duties as required. 

 

Enrollment Requirements

Fall/Spring Semesters: All student employees must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half-time enrollment for fall/spring semesters is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. International students must be enrolled full-time to be eligible to work as a student employee. Full-time enrollment is 9 credit hours for graduates and 12 credit hours for undergraduates.

Summer Semester: Student employees working regular student positions must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours to be eligible to work during the summer. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in fall classes in order to work during the summer, but they (and the department) will be required to pay FICA taxes. Student employees working FWSP positions must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours (if undergraduate) or 5 credit hours (if graduate) in order to work during the summer in a Federal Work Study Program position.

Enrollment Exception: If the number of credit hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum number of hours required for student employment, the student must obtain a letter from their Academic Advisor (stating the number of hours needed to graduate and anticipated graduation date) and submit it to Human Resources. This pertains to both regular and Federal Work Study Program positions. Contact jobs@uco.edu for more information.

 

Qualifications/Experience Required

  • Strong interest in, and understanding of the importance of, digital accessibility. 
  • The position requires a UCO student with a bachelor’s degree and Graduate Student status. Preference will be given to students enrolled through the University of Central Oklahoma's Graduate College in pursuit of a master’s degree. 
  • Ability to work individually on a project or in a team environment.  
  • Computer literacy is required, including the Microsoft Office suite. 
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to resolve issues and troubleshoot problems 
  • Willingness to learn new skills.  
  • A demonstrated willingness to learn about, and sensitively work with, people from various backgrounds and experiences. 
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and communication skills. 
  • Dedication to accuracy and excellence. 
  • Familiarity with digital accessibility concepts and standards such as WCAG 2.1 A and AA standards and regulations. 

 

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

  • Enrolled in, or completed, Digital Accessibility Foundations micro-credential. 
  • Familiarity with accessibility policies and guidelines such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and UCO Information Communications Technology Accessibility Policy. 
  • Understanding of accessible web design principles and techniques and web authoring technologies (HTML/CSS). 
  • Academic research experience.
