Staff Psychiatrist

University of California
San Francisco, CA Part Time
POSTED ON 4/12/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/11/2026
Part Time Days, Variable 8 Hours Tuesday 8 hrs, Wednesday 8 hrs, Thursday 8hrs

The primary role of the Staff Psychiatrist is to provide direct psychiatric assessment/ consultation and psychiatry medication management to patients who have been referred for the treatment of trauma-related disorders and related symptoms (e.g., sleep disturbance). Additionally, patients may need support for pre-existing psychiatric disorders such as recurrent major depression, bipolar disorder or substance use disorder. Approximately 1/3 of TRC-RTC patients accept or request referral to psychiatric care, with needs ranging from support for insomnia to complex pharmacology for those with co-morbid diagnoses. Working with TRC-RTC therapist colleagues, the staff psychiatrist will support screening for SUD and offer MAT for those whose use interferes with recovery from trauma. The staff psychiatrist is responsible for consultation to therapist colleagues on complex diagnostic or management issues and will support short-term disability consultations as clinically indicated. As many patients are followed in Community Mental Health clinics, the staff psychiatrist will also communicate on psychiatric medications to the primary care providers and coordinate medical care such as lab follow-up etc., as needed. Patients who are psychiatrically stable on easily managed medications can be transferred back to primary care, with the understanding that the staff psychiatrist remains available for consultation or reassessment while the patient is completing treatment at TRC-RTC. Examples include someone taking trazodone or mirtazapine for sleep, or who has responded to a therapeutic dose of SSRI for severe anxiety.

Additional duties include supervising naloxone distribution in the clinic: naloxone is available free from the CBH pharmacy, and made available to patients by clinicians. Annually, the staff psychiatrist will review naloxone administration with clinic staff. The staff psychiatrist will also provide annual de-escalation training. It is hoped that the staff psychiatrist will be able to take on QI projects helpful to clinic function, in consultation with the Division Director and other clinic staff.
