Job Description The Health Information Coder III is a senior-level inpatient coder with the knowledge and skill set to utilize the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS classification systems to code acute academic, teaching inpatient cases. The skill set extends to knowledge and comprehension of code sequences into Diagnoses-Related Groups on acute academic, teaching inpatient cases. Cases are coded to comply with the official guidelines for coding and reporting, practice standards and code of ethics for HIMS coder. Cases are abstracted according to UCSF Health policies and procedures. The focus of coding and abstracting is on a range of all primary hospital services. There is minimal review of coding for quality. DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Retrieve and analyze comprehensive medical records and information systems for appropriate documentation and follow-up as appropriate.  

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The hourly rate for this role is $70.02 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description UCSF Health Information Management Services (HIMS) is a vital department dedicated to managing and safeguarding patient health information across UCSF Health. Qualifications Required Qualifications • High school diploma or equivalent • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification • 3 years of inpatient DRG coding and abstracting experience in an academic teaching hospital • Must pass initial knowledge assessment with a minimum score of 86.6% • Must meet daily production requirements with a minimum accuracy rate of 95% • Basic EHR and encoder skills • Basic computer skills, including Windows, Word, and Excel • Proven excellent communication and teamwork skills • Ability to analyze information, make decisions, and exercise independent judgment • Ability to follow written directions • Ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines • Ability to perform well under pressure • Knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, disease processes, anatomy, and physiology • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT classification systems Preferred Qualifications • Knowledge of HIMS database systems • Knowledge of HIMS procedures License / Certification • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification About UCSF The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care.
