Involves accounting functions such as analyzing, monitoring, preparing and reconciling financial information to reflect the condition of the organization and provide financial and other statistical data to control operations. Also may involve preparation of financial reports to meet internal and external reporting requirements. May include activities relating to developing, implementing and monitoring accounting systems, policies and procedures.
Department Overview:
The UCSF Controllerâs organization delivers full accounting services and related systems for faculty, staff and students, UCSF Foundation, all University departments and any outside entities who have a business relationship with  the  University.  Services  provided  include  General  Ledger,  Capital  and  Cash  Accounting,  Payroll,  Student  Loan Billing and Collections, Sponsored Research Accounting, and a Customer Service Center. The office uses sophisticated technology to account and report on UCSF financial activity. The candidate should have a firm understanding of accounting systems in a large and complex environment.
The  General  Accounting  unit  is  a  major  unit  of  the  Controllerâs  office.  The  General  Accounting  unit  is  responsible  for reporting UCSF consolidated financial results including Campus and UCSF Health, to the UC Office of the President. They are responsible for key internal controls, reporting and presenting consolidated financial results to UCSF leadership including analysis and explanation of results and variances to trend and/or plan. Included in this responsibility is also the entire fiscal year-end close process including UCOP financial reporting deadlines and leading the external audit engagement. In addition, this unit participates in the development, implementation, and training for new systems or processes, and provides customer support to the UCSF community who utilize our services and systems, including PeopleSoft General Ledger and interpretation of UC policies, procedures, and acceptable accounting practices.
Qualifications Minimum Requirements: - Bachelor's degree in accounting or related area - 7 or more years of experience in an organization comparable to UCSF in terms of size, complexity, and scope of operation - 4 or more yearsâ experience in a leadership role in a large diversified and complex finance focused environment, requiring motivating and managing a diverse group of people towards a common goal - Knowledge of large scale integrated ERP financial systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, Oracle, Workday, SAP) - Thorough knowledge of finance, accounting, business and systems operations and regulatory - compliance requirements - Thorough understanding and familiarity with all of GAAP, GASB, and FASB - Proven ability to deliver results in a dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders - Demonstrated experience with preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and related presentations, and detailed variance analysis - Demonstrated experience with improving business processes and accounting policies, to ensure efficient and effective internal controls, data integrity and compliance with internal and - external policies and requirements - Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret and document financial results trends and variances timely (on an ad hoc, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis) - Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms with executive, senior management, faculty, staff, managers and technical staff - Demonstrated ability to develop solutions that meet the needs of customers with diverse skill sets in a decentralized environment - Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels. - Ability to work well in a collegial environment - Excellent service orientation skills; strong skills in management and leadership; excellent ability to use critical thinking, sound judgment, and decision-making skills to creatively solve problems - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Preferred Qualifications: - Certified Government Financial Manager - Certified Public Accountant - Strong knowledge of higher education best practices - Thorough knowledge of the organization's operational, personnel, and financial transactions and systems - License / Certification 0502-Accounting About UCSF The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care.
