Custom Scope
The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse who serves as an oncology and BMT nursing clinical expert, leader, consultant, educator, and mentor for the nursing staff and teams at UCSF Benioff Childrenâs Hospital (BCH). The specialized knowledge and skills required for this role include clinical expertise in oncology and stem cell transplant nursing; design and implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP), education and mentorship, consultation, performance improvement, and leadership. The Hematology/Oncology/BMT CNS role has three spheres of impact across the health system that include the patient/family, nursing/interprofessional teams, and the organization/health system. This role works collaboratively with the unitâs clinical leaders, the BCH CNS group, the Pediatric Nursing Professional Development Specialists, and hospital leadership to support and ensure high quality standards of nursing care and professional practice to optimize patient, team, and system outcomes.
Department Overview
C6 is a Pediatric Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant unit located on the 6th floor of the Benioff Childrenâs Hospital in San Francisco The overall unit is divided into 2 smaller units, a 24 bed Heme/Onc unit and a 13 bed Bone Marrow Transplant unit. C6 specializes in the treatment of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and, Bone Marrow Transplant patients as well as in the care of several Pediatric Surgical sub specialties such as ENT and Urology. C6 provides patients with a myriad of treatment modalities such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, Bone Marrow Transplant, and pain and palliative care. The patient acuity ranges from high to moderate with 4:1, 3:1, and 2:1 RN to patient ratios.Â
Qualifications Required Qualifications: - Minimum of 5 years of recent clinical RN experience in the specialty area - Master's degree from an accredited Nursing program - In-depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient/family educational consulting and resources. - Advanced knowledge of skill for conducting evidence-based practice, data collection, analysis, and reporting. - Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution. - Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, providers, ancillary services and departments, and outside agencies as required. - Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex and / or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner.
