DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Global and Community Health (GCH) is a new program at UC Santa Cruz aimed at addressing challenges of ill health both globally and locally. Interdisciplinary and collaborative in design, the program builds on existing UCSC strengths in the biology of neglected diseases; environmental influences on health; genomics; agroecological innovation; community studies; and research into the social, cultural, political, and economic determinants of health. The Divisions of Social Sciences and Physical and Biological Sciences, in collaboration with faculty and staff from all five divisions, have developed both a BA and BS in Global and Community Health, as well as pursuing new collaborative research initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes locally and globally.

JOB SUMMARY

Applies professional concepts to independently provide prescriptive advice on academic policies and procedures for the Global and Community Health BA degree directly and all aspects of course requirements for degree completion. Under the general direction of the Administrative Managing Director, the undergraduate advisor has programmatic responsibility for the administration of the GCH BA advising program, and works in partnership with the GCH BS program, MCD advising team and College 9 advising.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $26.87 - $30.84 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

30% -
  • Applies professional concepts to independently provide prescriptive advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress and major requirements for the GCH program.

20% -
  • Monitors and evaluates students' completion of academic requirements.

10% -
  • Recruits, trains and supervises student peer advisors. Interviews, hires, trains and supervise student workers.

10% -
  • Collaborate, coordinate and support GCH advising team and office, including GCH BS students as needed.

5% -
  • Identifies student needs for programs and services, and refers student to non-academic resources as appropriate.

5% -
  • Applies articulated courses to program / degree requirements and certifies degree completion.

  • Advises on moderately complex issues such as multiple degrees, or withdrawal from the University.

  • Advises department on scheduling needs for student course progression and requirements completion.

5% -
  • Communicates and exchanges information with other units of the organization and makes referrals to help students with their academic program (e.g., health service, disabled students program, Colleges / Schools, transfer center, academic departments).

  • Provides information to students on programs with special, clearly articulated eligibility requirements such as honors programs, awards, fellowships, scholarships, and advanced level courses.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Basic knowledge of advising and/or counseling techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and discretion with confidential matters.
  • Proven communication and interpersonal skills, with faculty and students, with individuals and large groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original idea to solve problems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
  • Ability to multi-task.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced degree in public health and/or advising or related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of program courses and majors.
  • Familiarity with campus programs, administrative units, and range of student services.
  • Knowledge of university policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Experience recruiting, interviewing, selecting and supervising student employees.
