The full salary range for this position is $73,800 to $131,200/year.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Accessible Course Design Specialist leads campus efforts to promote accessible digital learning environments through training, consultation, and instructional design support. This role coordinates and delivers faculty and TA training on accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), develops and maintains instructional resources, and provides expert guidance on designing accessible courses in Canvas and related instructional tools. The position works closely with faculty, teaching assistants, and campus partners to remediate non-accessible course content, ensure accurate implementation of testing accommodations, and encourage the adoption of accessible teaching practices. Responsibilities include developing training materials and multimedia resources, maintaining documentation and toolkits, consulting on effective use of technology to enhance inclusive instruction, and supporting course review and remediation processes. The Specialist also gathers and analyzes data to monitor accessibility compliance, assess training effectiveness, and identify trends and opportunities for improvement. This position represents UCSB in UC-wide instructional design and accessibility groups, contributing to systemwide initiatives that advance accessibility, inclusivity, and innovation in teaching and learning.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training

• 1-3 years Demonstrated expertise in college and university pedagogy and knowledge of research-based teaching and learning principles based on listed prior experience or publications

• Familiarity with higher education institutions or non-profit organizations.

• Familiarity with Universal Design for Learning.

• Experience with ADA compliance.

• Project management skills.

• Experience consulting with faculty on a range of issues related to the intersection of educational technology and effective pedagogical practice (across disciplinary boundaries).

• Demonstrated success as a collaborative team member

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills in a variety of interactions (e.g. written, verbal, in person, media).

• Remote classroom tech support (Medium proficiency)

• Working knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning.

• Working knowledge of online training platforms, technology, and best practices.

• Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches, including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology/Design or related field

• 1-3 years Experience with a range of educational technologies for delivering online learning experiences.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

• 60% Training and Consultation - Coordinate and lead training and support efforts for digital course content accessibility, including the appropriate use of integrated accessibility identification and remediation tools in Canvas. Consult with Faculty and TAs to support digital course content accessibility and remediation of non-accessible content. Facilitate, maintain and expand faculty training, workshops, and seminar offerings on accessibility/Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Coordinate asynchronous testing efforts. Work with Testing Center staff and UCSB faculty to ensure appropriate delivery of asynchronous assessments, including ensuring correct entry of accessibility accommodations into testing software. Provide consultation to instructors on the development of accessible courses in Canvas. Emphasizes understanding accessibility/Universal Design for Learning best practices, pedagogical approaches, course learning objectives, and instructional components Recommend effective and creative use of technologies to enhance instruction and create new learning environments, prioritizing accessible learning spaces.
• 35% Developing documentation and support materials - Create course- and context-appropriate documentation for faculty and TA use to design and teach accessible courses including guides, tutorials, and online teaching toolkits Provide online support services including but not limited to online teaching consultation, managing course review activities, remediation efforts, and developing online teaching resources Design and encourage the adoption of UCSB-specific templates in support of designing, implementing, and teaching accessible courses in teaching and learning. Develop training materials including videos, online tutorials, and other multimedia materials to assist faculty with instructional design principles, the use of online teaching and learning tools, and creating accessible course content. Utilize software such as web page development, desktop publishing, image editing and presentation tools to develop custom products to meet user needs.
• 5% Other Duties - Collect feedback to improve services and offerings. Analyze data, identify campus trends, and communicate online education related issues as needed. Tracks and reports on course content digital accessibility compliance. Interact with instructional designers from other UC campuses and contribute to instructional design group(s) among the University of California campuses.
