The Staff Speech Language Pathologist role will support patients in both Head and Neck Surgical Oncology (HN) and the Voice and Swallowing Center (VSC). The Staff Speech Language Pathologist, Speech Pathologist 2, reports to the Rehab Service Manager and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The Staff Speech Language Pathologist 2 works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, although pediatric and adolescent patients may also be treated. Under general direction and upon receipt of written referrals, the Staff Speech Language Pathologist 2 plans and administers a full range of speech therapy services for patients with a variety of voice, swallowing, and upper airway impairments and disabilities. Services include patient evaluations using speech language pathology tests and measurements, establishment of therapeutic intervention goals and development of therapeutic intervention programs, and implementation of therapeutic intervention plans utilizing all aspects of the speech language pathology scope of practice. The Staff Speech Pathologist maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of patient care services. While performing job duties, the Staff Speech Language Pathologist 2 may also supervise support personnel, student interns and Speech Language Pathology Clinical Fellows. The Staff Speech Language Pathologist 2 actively participates in departmental and organizational programs, including performance improvement activities, clinical education programs, and in-services and staff development activities.


Required qualifications:

  • Possession of a degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited professional educational program.
  • Minimum of 12 months experience as a licensed therapist.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to recognize signs of distress.
  • Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification.
  • Basic computer skills in word processing and online communication.
  • Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.
  • Demonstrated training and/or experience in voice, swallowing and/or upper airway disorders.
  • Prior training and/or experience with instrumental assessment of voice, swallowing, and/or upper airway (e.g. stroboscopy, laryngeal function studies, modified barium swallow study, flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior speech language pathology experience in an academic medical center environment.
  • Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team.
  • Experience with professional and performing voice including singing
  • Experience with gender affirming voice care
  • Experience with Head and Neck Cancer patients

License/Certification:

  • Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
