What are the responsibilities and job description for the Marshall Lab – Junior/Assistant Specialist position at University of California, San Francisco?

Position Description

Marshall Lab – Junior/Assistant Specialist

Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics

UC San Francisco

Carry out experimental research on the role of chromatin modifications in single-cell regeneration in the giant ciliate Stentor. How cells are able to form and regenerate pattern within themselves is a big open question in cell biology, and the unicellular organism Stentor provides a unique opportunity to address this question due to its ability to regenerate after physical perturbation. Although we know that gene expression programs underlie much of regeneration, we do not know how the genes are regulated. Given the role of chromatin modification in controlling important regulatory pathways in other organisms, combined with prior data on nuclear shape changes during regeneration, we expect to see alteration in histone modification during the regeneration process. This position will involve carrying out experiments to test this possibility.

Required Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) with three or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant rank.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with protein biochemistry methods in Stentor, specifically cell lysis, gel electrophoresis, and Western blot analysis of Stentor proteins.
  • Prior experience working with Stentor including culturing and manipulating the cells.
  • Knowledge of histone modifications and experience with using histone modification-specific antibodies as probes for modification state.
