UCSF is seeking an experienced Labor & Employee Relations Consultant to join our team. This is a senior-level role responsible for advising all levels of the organization on complex and high-impact labor and employee relations matters across the organization.

What You'll Do

As an LER Consultant, you will:

  • Provide strategic labor and employee relations counsel to leaders at all levels
  • Independently manage highly complex and sensitive ER cases, assessing risk and recommending solutions
  • Interpret and administer collective bargaining agreements and University policies
  • Investigate and respond to grievances and complaints
  • Design and deliver training to managers on labor relations, performance management, and workplace best practices
  • Promote proactive employee relations strategies that reduce organizational risk
  • Serve as a lead resource and subject matter expert within the department

This role operates with significant independence and requires sound judgment in high-visibility and high-risk situations.

What We're Looking For

We are seeking a seasoned LER professional who brings:

  • Demonstrated expertise in labor and employee relations within a unionized environment
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex disciplinary, performance management, attendance, and other labor & employee relations matters from intake through resolution
  • Strong analytical and risk assessment skills
  • The ability to influence and advise senior leadership with credibility and confidence
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced high volume environment
  • A collaborative, relationship-driven approach across diverse stakeholder groups

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $165,000 - $190,000 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and six year of experience in labor and employee relations or related field and/or and equivalent experience/training.
  • Has advanced knowledge of labor/employment law and the principles and techniques of labor negotiations.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of the principles of advocacy in order to represent the organization in complex and sensitive dispute forums.
  • Has advanced knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and court decisions regarding employment related matters.
  • Possesses specialized knowledge within labor relations field.
  • Demonstrates skills necessary to bargain and represent the organization's interests effectively.
  • Demonstrates ability to lead and mentor other labor relations professionals.
  • Possesses advanced analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of organizational policies and procedures; advanced knowledge of functional area and understands how work impacts other areas in Human Resources and the organization.
  • Public sector, higher education.
