Clinical Pharmacy Supervisor

University of California - San Francisco
San Francisco, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/9/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 6/8/2026

Under general direction of their Pharmacy Manager, the Pharmacy Clinical Supervisor will supervise day-to-day activities of their staff. This includes personnel development, evaluation, and discipline, troubleshooting, coordinating the unit's activities with other units within the department, and directing the unit's functions to address the needs of the organization as a whole. Specific operational duties include staff competencies, service-specific workflow, and medication management. Additional duties and essential job functions are broad in scope and require extensive experience and knowledge of the healthcare system, pharmacy services, and understanding and enforcement of all laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines that govern pharmacy practice. The Pharmacy Supervisor may, for example, have responsibility for the ongoing design and management of the department's education and training program, an operational or service unit, a comprehensive data processing system, and/or studies that require an overall knowledge of trends and problems affecting pharmacy operations. The majority of annualized work time is spent fulfilling Pharmacy Supervisor responsibilities as well as staffing in at least one of the clinical areas of oversight. The remainder may, as required, be spent developing skills needed to provide specialist- or assistant director-level services.

The duties and essential job functions of the Pharmacy Supervisor depend on the complexity of the unit or program managed. As a Pharmacy Supervisor, the incumbent interviews, selects, or effectively recommends the selection of prospective employees; reviews and evaluates the work of subordinate professional and ancillary technical staff; reviews the quality control of the work performed; evaluates workload, space, equipment, and staffing; and assists in the preparation of the budget.

Additionally, these job duties may be modified to reflect the unique nature of the organizational unit for which the Pharmacy Supervisor is administratively responsible. Among the essential services, the Supervisor maintains a key decision-making role in the planning, selection, implementation, and maintenance of computerized patient information systems, including computerized order-entry systems, to facilitate clinical decision support, data analysis, and user education for the purpose of ensuring the safe and effective use of medications.
