The Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP) Organization seeks a candidate who will serve in the role of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Office of Research (OoR) The UCSF Office of Research, led by the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR), focuses on the academic mission of UCSF, with a particular emphasis on academic research operations and science policy. The CAO is responsible for the human resource management, budget, technology and space management of the units within the Office. This includes oversight of centralized research administrative services delivered by 582 FTE, provided to approximately 3,387 investigators across all UCSF professional schools. The CAO manages a $125M budget.


  • Excellent leadership abilities to oversee multiple functions or departments through subordinate managers.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Skills in establishing and implementing customer service standards.
  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals which measure effectiveness of contributions to efficient operations of department.
  • Strong knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Advanced project management skills, including the capability to manage capital projects.
  • Success with leading large-scale change initiatives in a complex organization
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative management theory and ability to translate this knowledge into practice. Advanced skills in strategy development, systems planning and change management.
  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and influence others and to develop and maintain high standards of customer service. Experience in building productive, collaborative relationships.
  • Management experience (minimum 5 years) in an academic research environment or equivalent experience.
  • Very strong ability to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment in advocating and incorporating the policy and program needs of a complex, multi-unit organization into the broader organization-wide/corporate-wide plans and programs.
  • Direct financial management experience for a large, complex academic operation. Demonstrated success in developing and managing large budgets in a resource-constrained environment.
  • 10 years of directly-related experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • On-site requirement: 4 days per week (minimum)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of staff due process policies and procedures, conflict resolution strategies, and skill in mediating disputes.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures in all functional areas: sponsored research, research infrastructure, finance and accounting, and academic and staff personnel
  • Demonstrated experience in successful crisis management
  • Master's degree preferred or equivalent level of education and experience.
