Job Summary

The Sign Language Medical Interpreter position duties are to provide concise, objective, and accurate interpretation, translation and transliteration for patients, their caregiver, family members, providers, and staff who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing throughout UCSF School of Dentistry in person and by video. Sign Language Medical Interpreter provides a communication link between the d/Deaf or hard of hearing patients and staff by transmitting information by employing consecutive and simultaneous interpreting/transliterating skills. This position will be primarily assigned to assist d/Deaf resident(s). Employs American Sign Language (ASL) and various communication modes, such as fingerspelling and Conceptually Accurate Signed English. May provide explanatory or additional interpretation on request.

Under the direction and operational oversight of the GPR Resident Program Director and the departmental management team assists with Sign Language medical interpreting/translating, and provides sign language medical interpreting/translating during patient care. Functions as a member of the health care team and demonstrates the ability to consistently interpret complex and difficult communications in all patient, caregiver, and provider interactions in a medical setting.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

The School provides comprehensive oral health care services with over 120,000 patient visits per year. We offer a four-year DDS program as well as a two-year program for international dentists that culminates in the DDS degree. We have numerous specialty residencies, PhD and Master's degree programs in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences, a combined DDS-PhD program, and a combined PhD-dental specialty training program. Other graduate programs include Craniofacial and Mesenchymal Biology and Bioengineering, and a DDS/MBA program. The School is one of the preeminent oral and craniofacial research enterprises in the world, ranking number one in National Institute of Health funding for 24 consecutive years.

The Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) teaches both theoretical and clinical courses in the predoctoral dental curriculum and offers instruction in medical emergencies in dental hygiene and predoctoral dental programs. Basic research in the department include investigations of the mechanisms of bone growth and replacement, the use of lasers and mechanisms of pain, and studies of treatment and outcomes of implant, orthognathic, TMJ, and reconstructive surgery.

The department provides clinical care in oral and maxillofacial surgery to ambulatory patients at the Dental Clinics Building, the OMFS Clinic at Moffitt Hospital, and the oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic at San Francisco General Hospital. Treatment for hospitalized patients is provided at Moffitt/Long Hospital, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF/Mount Zion, and Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The General Practice Residency Program serves Dental Oncology patients at Mission Bay, skilled nursing facility patients at Laguna Honda Hospital and Special Needs patients in the Dental Clinic and in the OR of Moffitt/Long Hospital.

The department also provides Oral Surgery faculty for the Highland Hospital in Oakland and Benioff Children's Hospital of Oakland. The department provides elective courses in oral and maxillofacial surgery at San Francisco General Hospital and implant clerkships where students learn to assist with surgical procedures. The department's postgraduate residency program leads to certification in OMFS with an MD degree.

Required Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent
• Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certificate in interpretation or transliteration and/or NAD Level IV, or Level V certification
• Four (4 ) years of experience as a professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter in a medical setting.
• 60 semester units or 1200 hours of postsecondary interpreting experience, proficiency in American Sign Language and Signed English; and knowledge of the ethics of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of appropriate roles, ethical standards, and individual responsibilities relating to working with d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and their families with the ability to incorporate them into the context of daily work activities.
• Knowledge of the various modes of communication and needs of d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients.
• Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
• Strong organizational skills to determine patient and workload priorities to enable completion of appointments and projects in a timely manner.
• Experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Extensive knowledge of medical terminology in source and target language(s); intermediate-to-advanced knowledge of human anatomy and systemic physiology, as validated by achieving a passing score on the prerequisite UCSF approved competency assessment
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to exercise sensitivity and patience during interactions with the general public, patients, caregivers, families, and clinical staff in high pressure situations, while maintaining strict adherence to patient confidentiality and awareness of cultural differences
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to function efficiently in a complex, multi-faceted, and fast-paced setting

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of and experience working in a Dental environment
• Extensive knowledge of UCSF Health policies, procedures, and protocols
• Knowledge of and experience in remote interpreting technology
• Experience working with the community and/or target language population with diverse cultural/socio-economic backgrounds.
• Proven competency in additional languages

License/Certification

• Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certificate in interpretation or transliteration and/or NAD Level IV, or Level V certification
