Position description

The Department of Sociology at the University of California, Riverside invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor of Teaching beginning July 1, 2026. This position is equivalent in level to other Associate and Full Professor positions, but with an emphasis on excellence in teaching and teaching-related activities. We seek someone who specializes in Criminology. Completion of a PhD in Sociology is required.

An Associate or Full Professor of Teaching is a member of the academic senate and will be expected to teach six classes across three quarters yearly. Teaching Professors are expected to provide outstanding teaching, as well as demonstrate a commitment to high quality professional activity (such as research on pedagogy and/or sociology), and service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and university. Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a proven record of teaching excellence beyond experience as teaching assistants, and those prepared to teach required core courses at the lower and upper division, and those that contribute to the Law and Society concentration, including Corrections, Organized Crime, Law and Society, and Deviance. We strive to better equip students with concrete skillsets that contribute to job attainment upon graduation by emphasizing them in our courses, including the ability to problem-solve, technological proficiency, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and strong written and oral communication. We desire candidates who share these goals.

Complete applications must contain a cover letter of interest, CV, a teaching statement, and evidence of teaching excellence, such as teaching evaluations and innovative instructional materials. We also require a research statement, two samples of pedagogical and/or research work, and names and contact information for three references.

Review of applications will begin on January 26, 2026 and may continue until the position is filled. Applications received by January 26 will be given full consideration.

The University of California values salary transparency and reports salaries annually in the UC Annual Wage Database. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table(s) https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2025-26/policy-covered-october-2025-scales/t1.pdf. Salary ranges for this position are $99,600 - $124,500 for the Associate Professor of Teaching and $116,600 - $212,000 for the Full Professor of Teaching. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive condition.
