POSITION SUMMARY
University of California Press seeks an Associate Editor who will focus on acquiring new titles for Geography and Environmental Studies.
Responsibilities
50%
Acquisitions: Works with the editorial director to establish focus of acquisitions & develop a strategy for those lists. Develops network of scholars, authors, & agents for the purpose of obtaining manuscripts. Conceives of book ideas. Judges whether projects are publishable editorially & financially; obtains critical readings; presents them before the faculty Editorial Committee.

Prepare Materials for Production: Guides authors in preparing manuscripts for production, evaluate art and permissions and format files, and act as liaison to the production department. Works with production to ensure proper preparation of manuscripts & set schedule priorities.

Collaborates with Sales & Marketing.

Travels to academic conferences and visits campuses.

Salary:
Candidates with 2 - 3 years' publishing experience salary range = $75,500 - $78,500
Candidates with 4 - 6 years' publishing experience salary range = $79,000 - $82,000

Required Qualifications
- 2 - 3 years of publishing experience.
- Some knowledge of industry standards to successfully manage book projects through all stages of the publishing process (including publishing contracts, negotiating terms, the form of manuscript acceptable for production, etc.).
- Interest in working in scholarly publishing.
- Basic understanding of financial models to assess the viability of assigned projects.
- Ability to take initiative to identify, create, develop, & evaluate book proposals.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong critical thinking skills.
- Strong collaborative skills to work effectively across the organization at all levels.
- Good project management skills; be organized and capable of prioritizing across activities & projects.
Education
- Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
