Reader in the School of Engineering: Academic Year 2026-2027 (Anticipated)

The School of Engineering anticipates hiring multiple Readers for the below courses for Academic Year 2026-2027:

SPARK 010 - Cornerstone Engineering Design (formerly Inclusive Innovation)
ENGR 096 - Human Centered Research and Design Engineering
Other courses as needed

The Reader will be responsible for grading homework, quizzes, exams as needed under the supervisor of the instructor. The position will require up to a maximum of 18 hours per week.

The University of California Readers are represented by the UAW-AFL-CIO.

Interested applicants should submit a 1) cover letter identifying the course(s) you are interested in being a Reader for, 2) curriculum vitae/resume, and 3) unofficial transcript confirming you have successfully completed and received a grade of "B" or higher in the course or related course you are requesting to be a Reader for and are in good standing at the University with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). Appointments for AY 2026-2027 and/or Fall 2026 semester are reviewed around April, and for Spring 2027 semester are reviewed around October. Applications will be reviewed on a continuous basis and this job posting will remain open until February 2027 to accommodate upcoming course needs and new applicants.

Academic Year: 7/1/2026 - 6/30/2027
Fall Semester: 8/1/2026 - 12/31/2026
Spring Semester: 1/1/2027 - 5/31/2027

The Reader will have successfully completed the course or related course they are appointed to as a Reader with a grade of "B" or higher and be in good standing at the University with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). Readers will usually be graduate students; but qualified undergraduate students may be employed, especially when graduate students are not available. Professional readers, not enrolled as students, may be employed to meet special needs, but only on an hourly basis.

As a condition of employment, the finalist will be required to disclose if they are subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct.

"Misconduct" means any violation of the policies or laws governing conduct at the applicant's previous place of employment, including, but not limited to, violations of policies or laws prohibiting sexual harassment, sexual assault, or other forms of harassment or discrimination, as defined by the employer.

Candidates must possess valid authorization to work in the United States. UC Merced is not currently able to sponsor individuals residing outside the United States who would require a new H-1B visa for employment.
