Position description

African American Studies

The Department of African American Studies at UCLA invites applications for non-tenure track lecturer positions in 2026-2027. We are looking for instructors who can teach generally a survey of courses in African American Studies and African diaspora courses. Areas of interest and focus may include music, religion, history, and cultural studies more generally. Lecturer appointments are part-time as dictated by instructional needs and budget constraints of the department.

Salary commensurate with applicant qualifications and experience; percentage of appointment commensurate with teaching load. See Table 15 Unit 18 Faculty Pre-Six - AY for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position $70,977 - $87,294.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are working transnationally, including African American and Africa diaspora studies, and whose scholarship and teaching are interdisciplinary as well as transdisciplinary in scope.

Candidates with a Ph.D. or equivalent in African American Studies, Africana Studies, Art History, History, Law, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Ethnomusicology, Education, Philosophy, Theater, Film, Literature, Humanities, Gender Studies, LGBTQ Studies, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Additionally, applicants who hold advanced professional degrees such as an M.F.A. may also be considered. Note, currently enrolled UC students are not eligible to apply. Applicants should have a minimum of two years of teaching experience and a demonstrated record of distinguished undergraduate teaching. Evidence of this teaching record must be supplied. Candidates with a Ph.D. or equivalent in African/African American Studies, American Studies, Art History, History, Law, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Ethnomusicology, Public Health, Education, Public Affairs, Urban Planning, Philosophy, Theater, Film, Literature, Humanities, Gender Studies, LGBTQ Studies, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Applicants who are advanced to Ph.D. candidacy or who have a M.A., M.F.A., or equivalent may be considered (currently enrolled UC students are not considered).
