The Statistical Programmer and Research Analyst will play a critical role in supporting research activities within the Department of Emergency Medicine. This position is responsible for managing large, complex databases; developing data cleaning and management procedures; and conducting advanced statistical programming and analysis using R. The role includes creating analytic datasets, supporting faculty and collaborators with project-specific data needs, and contributing to grant applications, manuscripts, and presentations. The candidate will also participate in meetings, communicate effectively with investigators, and may provide training to junior programmers or research staff.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position


  • Bachelor's degree in Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics, or a closely related quantitative science or equivalent training/experience.
  • 1–3 years of applied experience in data analysis, epidemiologic research, or biostatistics.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and contribute effectively in a fast-paced, multi-project environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in R programming, with extensive knowledge of R Base and R packages.
  • Demonstrated expertise with data table and arrow packages to manage large datasets (>100GB) and Parquet files.
  • Basic working knowledge of SQL for data manipulation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in team environments.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Professional certifications in data science, biostatistics, or epidemiology-related software/tools will be considered desirable.
  • Master's/Doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, ScD) in Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics, or a closely related quantitative science.
  • 3 years of progressive experience working with large-scale healthcare datasets (e.g., insurance claims, electronic health records).
  • Experience with OHDSI tools and software for data analysis.
  • Prior experience contributing to peer-reviewed research or high-impact analytic projects.
  • Expertise in statistical methods including linear models, non-linear models, survival analysis, and mixed-effects modeling.
  • Familiarity with causal inference methods (e.g., inverse probability weighting, g-formula).
  • Strong conceptual understanding of epidemiology principles, including confounding and collider bias.
  • Hands-on experience working with large, complex datasets such as insurance claims and electronic health records.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to evolving research needs and contribute creative analytic solutions.

Department Specific Job Scope


As part of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, this position will directly support a diverse portfolio of research, including NIH- and foundation-funded studies. Research projects may involve observational cohorts, electronic health records, and large-scale claims databases with a focus on advancing knowledge in emergency medicine. The role requires collaboration with faculty, postdoctoral researchers, clinicians, fellows, and external partners to design and execute analytic strategies. Responsibilities include developing preliminary data for grant proposals, generating reports, abstracts, and manuscripts, and presenting findings at institutional, regional, national, and international forums. The candidate will also contribute to the development and implementation of novel statistical methods, ensuring the department remains at the forefront of emergency medicine research.
