Position description

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics with a preferred emphasis in financial and agricultural commodity market economics. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure-track Assistant Professor position.

The appointee is expected to establish a research program in financial and agricultural commodity market economics. The appointee will be responsible for teaching in the undergraduate joint business major, managerial economics major and M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Teaching responsibilities will consist of two courses in the first year, three in the second year, and four per year thereafter. The courses to be taught by the appointee will be set by the department chair based upon departmental needs and the successful candidate's interests/expertise. The appointee's primary teaching responsibilities are likely to include ARE 138 International Commodity & Resource Markets, 139 Futures & Options Markets, and 171 Principles of Finance. Other courses that the appointee may be asked to teach include UG courses in finance (172 and 173), MS level courses in agricultural economics and finance (223, 271), and PhD level courses in empirical methods (202B, 202C), and agricultural economics (231, 232, and 233). Other responsibilities include student advising at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and training/mentoring graduate students. Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected.

This recruitment is being conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.

The RAC will perform the initial anonymized screening after a staff member anonymizes applications.

Full-time Equivalent (FTE)
This position will be recruited at the Assistant Professor rank. This is a tenure-track academic year (9-month) position.

Availability of Space and Resources
Office space will be provided by the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in the Social Sciences and Humanities building on the UC Davis central campus. Faculty share administrative, accounting, and clerical staff. Ongoing instruction and research support is provided by a departmental computer facility, consisting of a local area network and centralized computing system, which augments the usual PC or Macintosh computing capabilities. Permanent Programmer/Analyst staff provides on-site assistance for most computing needs. Clerical support staff provides routine administrative services. Teaching Assistants and Readers are assigned to instructors with large-enrollment classes.

It is current department policy to provide a base level of support allocation to each faculty member, which funds routine annual expenses including telephone tolls, copy services, computer/software enhancements, minimal travel expenses, and any other expenses deemed necessary to support the position.

Start-up funding will be provided based on the programmatic needs of the successful candidate.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

* Ph.D. or equivalent in economics, agricultural economics, or a closely related discipline, including training in and/or knowledge of finance (degree must be awarded by start of position).

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

* Demonstrated expertise and research interest in financial and agricultural commodity market economics. This expertise could include (but is not limited to) work on the interdependence of physical and financial agricultural commodity markets; risk analysis of commodity derivatives; financialization of agricultural commodity markets; global and regional trade of agricultural commodities.

* Ability and interest to teach courses in finance, derivatives, and commodity markets (ARE 138, 139, 171, 172, 173). Ability and interest to teach courses in the MS and PhD programs, including 223, 271, 202B, 202C, 231, 232, and 233.

* Demonstrated ability or potential interest to

  • develop a distinguished research program resulting in publications in high-quality refereed journals;
  • develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and to present information to scientific audiences;
  • advise undergraduates in the undergraduate joint business major and the managerial economics major;
  • mentor M.S. and Ph.D. students in the Agricultural and Resource Economics graduate program;
  • work with peers in the department and on campus, to meet the mission of the University.

* Demonstrated ability or potential to obtain extramural support for research activities.
