Departmental Overview
The School of Public Health (SPH) is a large and complex professional school at UC Berkeley, with a mission to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research. The School is comprised of six academic divisions and 30 research centers and programs, with over 200 faculty, 120 academic/research staff, 155 management/professional/ administrative staff, and 285 student researchers/instructors/workers. The School offers a core MPH degree with nine areas of study, along with five MA and MS degree programs, a DrPH and five PhD degree programs, and five concurrent programs with other UC Berkeley schools and colleges; in addition, the School offers a joint degree with UC San Francisco. The School launched UC Berkeley's first on-line degree program in 2012 and is rapidly expanding the program to reach a wide range of domestic and international audiences through online degrees, certificate programs, and executive education. The School enrolls approximately 825 graduate students per year, as well as educating roughly 440 undergraduate students through an upper-division public health major. The School's more than 13,000 graduates can be found working throughout the world, in both the public and private sectors.

Responsibilities
Applying professional Student Services concepts, provides the full range of student advising and tracking services to a 400 member undergraduate, 100 Global Health Minor students and 300 prospective students at the School of Public Health.
May supervise staff.
Including the hiring, training and supervision of up to 6-7 undergraduate peer advisors/workstudy students.
Supervising 6-7 undergraduate representatives for SPH Committees including: Diversity Inclusion Community Equity Committee (DICE); Faculty Advisory Council (FAC), Education Policy and Curriculum Committee (EPCC) Undergraduate Management Committee (UGMC) and SPH Graduate Student Government.
Recruiting, hiring and supervising undergraduate tutors for Biostatistics and Epidemiology.
Plans, designs, and provides workshops for current, and prospective students, such as information about the major program, minor program, and campus, or academic strategies and enrichment programs and financial aid. Creates maintains SPH Undergraduate website, listserves and distributes a monthly newsletter and updates for all Undergraduate SPH students.
Professional Development activities and other duties as assigned.

Academic Advising
Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' and tracks student progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; devises curriculum planning in collaboration with chair/dean and faculty, and with other departments.
Recruitment and Admissions
Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, helps rank applicants for admissions; evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility; initiates and arranges student recruitment visits to Berkeley.
Student Conduct
Responsible for staying up to date, interpreting and communicating campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.
Serving as liaisons for SPH and L&S Biological Sciences Neighborhood with other L&S staff and MCB/IB advisors in tri-semesterly meetings to provide input and guidance and make recommendations for improvements within L&S major.
Course Scheduling
Devises and helps to navigate curriculum planning in collaboration with chair/dean, faculty, and the School of Public Health course scheduler and faculty director to ensure students' progress, and with other departments, to ensure students' progress through course sequences, avoiding conflicts, and ensuring compliance with campus-wide policies.
Distribute process and approve DeCal course information for the Academic year. Work collaboratively with the SPH course scheduler to complete DeCal requests and communicate those requests in information to appropriate faculty and campus partners.
Events
Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such honor thesis presentations, conducting virtual outreach/preparatory course in partnership with the UCB Campus, and College of Letters and Science in addition to the SPH outreach events.
Examples include Cal Day, Golden Bear Advising Week, and commencements.
Career Counseling
Advises School of Public Health Undergraduate department/college/school students on the job market process, and the standards and norms specific to the field of public health student's field of study; advises on summer internship programs; develops and maintains network of departments and regional firms interested in hiring summer students.
Organizes job fairs through partnerships, hosts graduate student panels with student representatives and peer advisors.
Develops and enhances an alumni recruitment network in collaboration with the Public Health Alumni Association and Undergraduate Alumni association on campus.
Identifies and cultivates potential employers.
Required Qualifications
Working knowledge of Undergraduate advising and counseling techniques. Close familiarity with or ability to learn campus resources at Tang Center, College of Letters and Science, Cesar Chavez Center, Sproul Hall, and elsewhere that provide support for students in all aspects of their academic and personal lives. Knowledge of or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs such as BearBuy, Campus Solutions, Cal Student Central etc, includes Microsoft suite of applications: Word, Excel, Power Point and Google Educational Suite. Skills in judgment and decision-making regarding or ability to learn Undergraduate and College of L&S rules and procedures. Capability to apply logic and sensitivity while responding rapidly during student crises. Ability to exercise consummate discretion regarding management of privileged information within the department. Advanced interpersonal skills including experience working with diverse populations and in teams. Competence working within or ability to learn a hierarchical academic structure and interfacing with leadership within the school and across campus. Skills in monitoring, assessing & communicating processes and services to make systems improvement recommendations and to implement them. Independent worker who manage projects reliability and meet deadlines. Ability to multi-task.

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $63,000.00-$71,000.00 (Grade 19).
