Departmental Overview

The Department of Theater, Dance & Performance Studies is in the Division of Humanities in the College of Letters and Science. Its programs integrate undergraduate and graduate instruction with student participation in theater and dance performance. The Department enrolls 1100 students in its 55-65 classes and seminars each semester. There are approximately 150 majors and 150 minors in addition to 25-30 students pursuing a Ph.D. Approx. 300 students are enrolled per semester in courses that engage in participation in production as actors, builders, stage crew, stage managers, directors, choreographers, or designers. An additional 170 students participate in summer sessions within the Department.

The Department produces annually 4-6 main stage shows; 6-10 workshop, studio, or showcase productions; 4-12 Dept. produced events and lectures; and 20-40 additional activities (rentals/loans of venues and/or equip., sponsorship of activities produced by other Depts., studio loans to campus and non-campus entities, etc.). Department welcomes more than 8000 patrons to it's events and productions annually.

The Department has 11 permanent faculty (8 FTE), 7 permanent lecturer positions (4 FTE), 3-6 temporary lecturers, 6 administrative staff (4.8 FTE), 9 Production staff (8 FTE), 5 musicians/accompanists, and 2-6 graduate student instructors.

The Department is responsible for three theaters -- the Zellerbach Playhouse (551 seats), The Durham Studio Theater (141 seats), and Zellerbach Room 7- Black Box (72 seats) -- three fully operating shops and associated spaces, significant storage and curatorial space, three dance studios, three acting studios, three design studios, additional classroom service space, a department library, and faculty and staff offices in both Dwinelle Annex and Zellerbach Hall.

Position Overview

The Theater Production Supervisor fulfills the roles of the Theater Manager and Head Electrician for the Theater, Dance & Performance Studies Department.

In the capacity of Head Electrician, The Theater Production Supervisor has primary responsibility for managing and reporting production lighting budgets and coordinating the installation, strike, maintenance, and operation of lighting equipment and inventories for all TDPS productions, classes and events. The Head Electrician is responsible for training and supervising students in the Lighting Labs for THEATER 168 and Run Crew for THEATER 167. Additionally, the Head Electrician collaborates with the Lighting Design Lecturer to coordinate and lead all light lab aspects included in THEATER 175A and 175B. The Head Electrician also advises on the feasibility of video/production equipment requests, installation and strike needs.

In the capacity of Theater Manager, The Theater Production Supervisor- in coordination with the Production Manager and Technical Director - has shared responsibility for the maintenance of the facilities and stage equipment, and for establishing policies and procedures for operations for all users in the three theater venues managed by TDPS (Zellerbach Playhouse, Zellerbach Black Box, and Durham Studio Theater) and the various dance and acting studio spaces. The Theater Manager also oversees and attends all technical rehearsals and performances for all TDPS productions. The Theater Manager also coordinates with Cal Performances' technical staff regarding the usage of shared space/facilities and equipment.

Responsibilities
Supervise and train students in laboratory settings and work study employees in the installation, operation and maintenance of lighting and special effects for theatrical and dance productions. Coordinate academic goals and evaluate students in laboratory work. Advise the Lighting Designer and Director on the feasibility of proposed lighting designs for each production, while maintaining artistic vision, production scope and budgetary limitations. Research new materials and techniques to fulfill designer concepts and determine techniques and details of installation, rigging, and operation of stage equipment and lighting. Set and coordinate design deadlines and installation and strike schedules for all TDPS productions. Advise on video/production installation, as needed. Attend technical and dress rehearsals and consult with directors/designers regarding notes, changes, and/or additions. Attend and oversee all performances. In coordination with the Production Manager and the Technical Director, manage the maintenance of facility and stage equipment. Establish policies and procedures for operations for all users in the three theater venues managed by TDPS (Zellerbach Playhouse, Zellerbach Black Box/Room 7, and Durham Studio Theater) and the various dance and acting studios. Identifies equipment needs; coordinates repairs; may participate in planning of major events. Ensures safe, proper practices of theatrical lighting installation and in safe use, proper handling, and maintenance of all machinery, power and hand tools, and other shop and theater equipment in accordance with federal, state, OSHA and Cal/OSHA guidelines and regulations. Oversees borrowing/rental of theatrical production elements. Administer budgets for areas of supervision, ensuring that expenditures are within agreed upon budgetary limits. Manage budgets for lighting and maintenance of theater facilities and equipment and coordinate with Production Manager regarding maintenance of studios, and other department spaces. Coordinate the ordering and use of materials for lighting, sound, and video design for Zellerbach Room 7, Durham Studio Theater, and Zellerbach Playhouse for all Department productions. Attends department staff and production meetings. Responsible for storage, cataloging, and disposal of all lighting equipment and design elements. Hanging and circuiting of a light plot. Operation of all common lighting components. Automated lighting fixtures and accessories, followspots, ellipsoidal spotlights, PARs, Fresnels, dimmers, control systems and network control systems. Troubleshooting of lighting systems and plots. Operation of standard theatrical lighting control consoles and moving lights controllers. Coordinate across all technical areas to ensure timely realization of event.
Required Qualifications
Mastery level knowledge of technical aspects of production areas, specifically lighting and theatrical rigging, and installation. Rigging: Knowledge of safe operation of theatrical rigging equipment including: line-sets and peripheral equipment; proper identification and assemblage of rigging components and knots; hanging and flying of lighting equipment. Good working knowledge/skills in basic financial administration. Advanced knowledge of production methods and techniques. Good working knowledge of collective bargaining policies, practices, rules, regulations, etc., including safety rules and regulations. Ability to prioritize competing needs over time between short (production based) and long term (organizational) goals. Good problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills. Computer Skills: VectorWorks (CAD), Google Suite, Lightwright, Excel, Microsoft Word, email and network, etc. Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills to communicate complex instructions and information to disparate constituencies. Knowledge of safe electrical installation and maintenance procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Computer Skills: Sketchup, AutoCAD, Filemaker Pro, UCB EH&S Chemical Inventory Database, PPCS Facilities management database, Rigging: Knowledge of safe operation of theatrical rigging equipment including: counter-weight purchase systems, block and tackle, block and fall, sand bag picks; chain motors and electric winches; trouble-shooting, maintenance, and repair or adjustment of rigging systems; maintenance of purchase system, line-sets and peripheral equipment; proper identification and assemblage of rigging components and knots. Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, which is paid hourly and eligible for full UC Benefits.

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $35.92 - $46.60.
