Departmental Overview

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a non-profit, academic research organization formed through the partnership of UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, and located on the UC Berkeley campus. A key focus of the IGI is accelerating translation of CRISPR-based approaches to address real-world problems in human health, agriculture, and climate.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction and in consultation with the Supervisor, the employee is responsible for assisting with management and technical support of IGI Plant Genomics Research Facility. They will have shared responsibility for inventory and ordering of supplies and maintenance and acquisition of laboratory equipment. The employee will be expected to contribute original ideas in carrying out the varied facets of the research endeavor. The employee will be involved with inter-laboratory collaboration, including exchange of materials and information. The employee will also produce materials for use in experiments, such as the introduction of DNA and RNPs into plants and regeneration of plants via plant tissue culture and will maintain experiments in growth chamber and greenhouse conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Under general supervision and in collaboration with PI and senior SRA, generation, genotyping and care of transgenic/genome-edited plants
Care of donor plant materials and transgenic/genome-edited plants in the growth chamber and greenhouse. Pollination of plants to generate donor plant materials for transformation.
Preparing media plates for both bacterial and tissue culture.
Technical training of IGI PGTF researchers and facility user
General lab maintenance including biological waste disposal and organizing freezer/fridge space.

Required Qualifications

Experience with plant tissue culture and transformation techniques e.g. Agrobacterium, biolistics, PEG (polyethylene glycol) and/or electroporation.
Experience in plant care and greenhouse work.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Highly motivated and diligent in work ethic.
Excellent organization skills (keeping track of the schedule, paperwork, sample storage, and inventory).
General computer skills (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel) for keeping track of results and sharing progress.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree (Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, or Cell Biology) or equivalent training/experience.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with standard molecular biology techniques: PCR; electrophoresis; western blot; microscopy.
Salary & Benefits

This position is exempt, monthly paid position. Annual pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
