Departmental Overview

The Essig Museum is a world-class research collection of insects and spiders with over five million specimens largely from western North America, with additional representation from Pacific Islands, Chile, Central America and other regions. Although the collection was inaugurated in 1939, some specimens date back to the 1880s. The collection continues to grow through the research enterprises of faculty, staff, and students, including biodiversity surveys, ecology and behavioral studies, and taxonomy and systematic research.

Responsibilities
Lead a small team in sorting field-collected specimens to morpho-species and creating a voucher collection. Travel to field sites across northern California leading a small team in the use of complementary sampling techniques to maximally capture insect diversity at each site. Manage specimens and Collecting Event data in a shared relational database, including GPS location, habitat description, sampling techniques employed, and other ecological data. Prepare selected specimens for DNA extraction and subsequent sequencing.
Required Qualifications
General knowledge and experience in entomology, including conducting fieldwork.

Education/Training:
Bachelor's of Science in Biology or a related field or equivalent training/experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of entomology, including collecting techniques, preservation, and identification.

Education/Training:
Master's of Science in Entomology or related field or equivalent in-lab and/or field experience.
Salary & Benefits

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits. This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly. The hourly pay for this role is $24.88 (step 1.0).
