Departmental Overview
The Access Services Division has leadership for planning and coordinating access and circulation policies and procedures across the UC Berkeley Library. Additionally, the Access Services Division consists of the following units - Doe/Moffitt Circulation Services, Information Desks Services, Library Privileges, Media Resources Center, Newspapers/Microforms Library and Current Periodicals, and Stacks Maintenance.
The Doe/Moffitt Circulation Services unit is the largest circulation services unit in the Library System, handling more than one million circulation transactions annually, including loaning electronic devices. This unit controls access to Doe and Moffitt libraries, Gardner (MAIN) Stacks, group study rooms (Gardner Stacks and Moffitt Library), and 65 Doe (Medium Rare collection). The unit follows the overall guidelines, policies, and priorities of the Library, under the direction of the Head of the Access Services Division.

Responsibilities
Manages day-to-day operations and the service points in Doe and Moffitt libraries, which includes maintaining quality control over services provided at the MAIN Circulation Desk, Moffitt Floor 3 and Floor 4 service desks, Gardner (MAIN) Stacks Level A portals, and the Information Desks services points in Doe, Gardner, and Moffitt. Manages the student electronic device lending program. Oversees staff performing circulation-related duties and assignments that involve a high degree of difficulty (i.e. processing the mixed media collections). Recommends changes to unit policies, processes, and procedures (ie. procurement of pagers for study rooms, development of the online reservation system for study rooms, and circulation process for electronic device borrowing). Prepares cost, time, and staffing estimates for circulation services projects; responsible for monitoring the annual General Assistance funds for Circulation and Information Desks services; coordinates with Library Facilities and Security Services to provide a safe environment at all service points and in Gardner (MAIN) Stacks. Works with the Head of the Access Services Division to plan and provide services to users of the 24-hour space in Moffitt Library. Operates as the functional circulation services expert. Assists library users at the Main/Moffitt service desks, including checking out/in, renewing and placing holds on library materials, handling claims returned items, and requesting material from NRLF. Answers user inquiries (in-person and via telephone). Explains and interprets library policies and procedures, including access policies to non-UC Berkeley affiliated library users, and enforces policies when necessary. Interprets and applies department circulation rules and handles problems and questions from library users regarding billing and circulation transactions in accordance with Access Services Division and Library Privileges Desk policies and practices. Supervises and provides guidance to 6 FTE career staff and approximately 200 student library employees who perform routine duties and responsibilities according to established guidelines, procedures, and policies. Manages schedules of staff to ensure adequate coverage for library users at seven service points in Gardner Stacks, Doe, and Moffitt libraries. Monitors CalTime timecard system. Provides direction and assistance to subordinates on difficult and complex operational library services matters. Creates circulation/public service desk training manuals; coordinates training procedures with the assistance of the circulation supervisors. Assists the Access Services Division Head in setting performance expectations, monitoring performance, and recommending employee selection, corrective action, and dismissals. Assists division head with planning division or library-wide projects and implementation of improved or new services. Gathers and reports departmental collections statistical data (i.e. circulation and privileges desks usage statistics, patron counts). Works with the division head to design useful collections data from the library's integrated library system, spreadsheets, and reports. Maintains and updates the division's web pages, making corrections and adding new information as needed. Maintains the hours' database for Doe/Moffitt libraries units. Monitors supply/expense allocation and orders supplies for Access Services Division. Maintains regular Privileges Desk assignments in-person and virtually via LibAnswers assisting library users: issuing library cards and borrowing privileges, interpreting library policies and procedures as related to library access and borrowing, and resolve problems, and answering questions regarding billing or borrowing issues Serves as an active member of library, campus, and System-wide groups such as Access Services Advisory Group, Circulation Services Group, Library Mentoring Subgroup, ILS Steering Committee, and UC Circulation Heads. Serves as secondary contact for Access Services Division during emergencies (Access Service Division head is primary contact).
Required Qualifications
Advanced professional and/or highly specialized functional subject area knowledge, which may be acquired through considerable library experience, specialized training, or relevant academic preparation. Strong management, supervisory, and organizational leadership skills, (including hiring, training, coaching, delegating, evaluating, and motivating employees). Significant experience with circulation services and/or technical processing in a library. Recent experience with an integrated library system (ILS) and understanding of ILS bibliographic, item, and holding records. Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities and improve workflows. Demonstrated strong commitment to public services and improving the user experience. Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Academic library experience. Alma ILS experience. Experience managing physical operations and staff in multiple locations. Experience interpreting and monitoring budgets.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $83,000.00 - $87,000.00.
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits. This position is exempt and paid monthly.
