The role

The Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Bristol is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Engineering Biology within the School of Engineering Mathematics and Technology (SEMT). This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment at a time of significant institutional investment and growth. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued development of Engineering Biology within the School and play a key role in the Engineering Biology Centre for Doctoral Training (EngBio CDT): a collaborative PhD programme led by Bristol in partnership with the University of Oxford and industrial partners. The EngBio CDT delivers cohort-based doctoral training focused on translating engineering biology concepts and technologies into real-world applications, with strong industrial engagement and an emphasis on impact.

What will you be doing?

You will develop and lead an internationally recognised research programme in Engineering Biology, producing high-quality publications in leading venues and securing external research funding from government bodies, industry and other partners. Working collaboratively across disciplines, you will build strong internal and external partnerships, contributing to knowledge exchange and ensuring your research delivers meaningful real-world impact. You will play an active role in delivering high-quality, innovative teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This will include contributing to the EngBio CDT through student recruitment, teaching, supervision and participation in cohort-based training activities. You will supervise and assess research projects, provide personal tutoring, and contribute to lectures, laboratories and problem classes.

You should apply if

This role will suit an ambitious and collaborative academic who is passionate about advancing Engineering Biology and training the next generation of researchers and innovators.

You Should Apply If You

  • Show evidence of securing, or clear potential to secure, external research funding.
  • Have experience of (or strong commitment to) teaching and supervising students at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Are enthusiastic about interdisciplinary working across biology, engineering, AI and data science.
  • Have experience of, or interest in, collaborating with industry and external partners.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.

Flexible and part-time working arrangements can be discussed.
