Summary Of Job Duties

The Department of Physics in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for an Associate Professor of Physics position in theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics/materials science, potentially with tenure, subject to board approval, to begin in the Spring of 2026. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a vigorous, externally funded research program and demonstrate a commitment to teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Preference will be given to candidates whose research programs would benefit from and contribute to existing strengths within and outside the department, while also expanding our research profile in new directions. Specifically, we seek a candidate who will combine density functional theory and other computational approaches to the theory of ferroelectric materials while also pursuing an experimental research program in the area of nonlinear optical properties of ferroelectric materials.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Physics from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment
  • A demonstrated potential for exceptional teaching and mentoring at the graduate level and/or undergraduate level
  • Evidence of an active research agenda and scholarly activity, with a focus on both computational theoretical condensed matter physics and experimental nonlinear optics
  • An outstanding record of research achievement and external funding

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and/or cross-campus collaborations
  • Strong record of successful publication and external funding in the thematic and/or methodological areas of position focus
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective undergraduate and graduate classes that complement the current course catalog
  • Experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in independent research
  • Strong evidence of the ability to be an active, involved, and collegial member of a collaborative faculty team both on campus and in relevant national service organizations
