The Tsunami Bowl, Alaska's regional National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) competition, is seeking a part-time Program Coordinator to help bring the 2026 event to life. Based in Seward and supported by the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, the Tsunami Bowl connects high school teams from across the state through a competition focused on ocean science, research, and education.
This temporary contract role runs from now through April 2026, with a flexible schedule that increases in intensity as the competition weekend (March 26–29, 2026) approaches. You'll work closely with the Seward Marine Center (SMC) team and a wide network of coaches, students, volunteers, and educators across Alaska.
What You'll Do:
- Coordinate meetings, trainings, and outreach with coaches and teams
- Manage registration and event logistics
- Support travel planning and lodging arrangements
- Communicate with volunteers, educators, and partners
- Assist with social media, press, and community announcements
- Support on-site event operations during the competition weekend
The Ideal Candidate Is:
- Organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented
- Comfortable managing multiple tasks and deadlines
- Familiar with youth programs, educational events, or STEM outreach
- A proactive communicator and quick learner
- Based in or near Seward, or able to work remotely with periodic in-person support
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent time management and organizational abilities
- Familiarity with online tools (e.g., Google Drive, email, social media, Zoom)
- Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Basic budgeting and expense-tracking skills
- Comfortable coordinating with educators, students, and volunteers
- Adaptability and calm under pressure, especially during event weekends
- A valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience with event planning, youth programming, STEM education, or outreach
- Familiarity with marine science, Alaska education, or competition logistics
Position Details:
This position is based in Seward with a flexible schedule. It is a part-time, non-exempt temporary role, with hours that increase leading up to the competition. New hires will be placed on the UA Temporary Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 77, based on education and experience. This position begins as soon as possible and ends in April 2026.
