General Responsibilities:
To perform a variety of routine histological procedures in Animal Resources related to the preparation of gnotobiotic animal tissue for microscopic examination by a pathologist. To perform procedures including embedding, microtomy, staining, and other special techniques needed for diagnosis.

Minimum Requirements:
High School diploma or GED required.
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations:
Currently certified or eligible for certification as a Histotechnician (HT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is preferred.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Embeds gnotobiotic animal tissue and performs microtomy.
- Receives and prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination, including embedding, microtomy, staining, and special techniques needed for microscopic diagnosis.
- Maintains Animal Resources laboratory work areas in good order including frozen section lab and gross room. Assists pathologists as needed.
- Operates and maintains laboratory equipment including that in frozen section and gross rooms according to instrument manufacturer, safety and quality control protocols. Documents appropriately.
- Utilizes laboratory information systems effectively to determine status of animal specimens.
- Receives and prepare animal specimens for gross examination and dissection by the pathologist.
- Maintains accountability for a safe environment.
- Demonstrates personal accountability for professional growth.
- Supports quality and fiscal goals for department and institution.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
