Duties and Responsibilities:

- Understands how equitable and inclusive environments are created and maintained.
- Understands and adheres to ethical guidelines outlined by the university and National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).Begins articulating personal philosophy of advising.
- Creates rapport and maintains relationships with a basic level of ability.
- Communicates in a culturally inclusive and competent manner and facilitates student appointments.
- Continues to develop both oral and written communication skills.
- Provides guidance and advice to students on course selection, course prerequisites, career planning and continuing higher education.
- Proactively identifies and provides support to students who are not meeting the academic expectations of the program and the university (i.e., warning, probation suspension).
- Contacts unregistered students for outreach and retention of students.
- Coordinates support services for students, including referrals to other offices as required.
- Assists with student recruitment, orientation and retention (some evening and weekend work required).
- Serves on special committees as needed. Maintains accurate student information, records and adheres to confidentiality standards.
- Prepares special and recurring reports regarding status of students and/or assists with departments with course curriculum scheduling initiatives.
- Processes applications for degrees.
- Continues education beyond hire (coursework, webinars and conferences). Attends any training in the unit or offered at UAB level to increase knowledge and develop cross-campus colleague network.
- Seeks advice and mentorship from senior advisors and directors.
- Perform other duties as assigned
