SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Department Supervisor, this position performs assigned functions for continuity of patient care and efficient patient flow. Need to maintain a high quality of patient care that is evidence based.
The Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) provides primary women’s health care focusing on gynecological and preventative health needs of women throughout their life spans. The WHNP exercises a high level of independent judgment in managing patient care assessing risk status.
The WHNP practices within a health care system that provides for physician consultation, collaborative management and referral as indicated by the health status of the patient. The WHNP is administratively accountable to the Lead Prenatal & Women’s Health Physician and Chief Operating Officer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Demonstrates obstetrical and gynecological theoretical knowledge, hand skills; follow clinical guidelines, policies and procedures.
2. Provides primary care in an ambulatory setting to women including timely ordering and accurate evaluation of diagnostic tests and management of minor complications. Identifies factors that indicate deviations from normal and provides follow-up services according to the standards delineated in the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice.
3. Performs a comprehensive history and physical exam in an accurate and timely manner. Develops and implements a plan of care with the patient which is consistent with the clinical objectives of the multi-disciplinary gynecological and/or prenatal team.
4. Prescribes appropriate treatments and medications from an approved formulary for the management of a client’s contraceptive needs and/or for specific medical problems.
5. Identifies deviations from normal and consults, co-manages or refers as appropriate.
6. Ensure compliance with productivity and documentation standards including:
a. Meeting goal of 16-20 patients to be seen in an average 8-hour day.
b. Complete all documentation, coding and data collection
c. Meet schedule and accuracy requirements for UDS data collection purposes.
7. Participates in a continuous, collaborative peer review process and in audits to conform to regulatory standards.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position may have supervisory responsibility to medical assistants and licensed vocational nurses. He or she may be expected to provide leadership and instruction to volunteers, students and less experienced staff.
QUALIFICATIONS/ POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Successful completion and acceptable results of post offer physical examination, drug screening, and criminal background check.
- Healthcare Personnel Requirements for vaccinations and preventative testing: Hep B, Influenza, MMR, TDAP, and TB
EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE:

WHNPs care for women throughout their life spans, therefore there is a broad spectrum of responsibilities:
- Conducting well-woman exams
- Performing primary care procedures like pap smears, endometrial biopsies, and colposcopies
- Reviewing preventive health needs
- Educating and prescribing available contraception
- Inserting long-acting reversible contraception such as Intrauterine devices and Implanted devices
- Educating and counseling on unexpected pregnancies
- Ordering and interpreting blood and imaging tests
- Addressing infertility concerns
- Sexually transmitted infection diagnosis, treatment, and education
- Managing women through the perinatal period, such as confirming/dating pregnancy; educating on pregnancy health; performing ultrasounds; and monitoring fetal activity
- Menopause education and counseling
- Intimacy and sexual health
- Screening for domestic violence, substance abuse, and high-risk behaviors
- Diagnosing female-related disease processes
EDUCATION:
- Requires valid license to practice medicine in the State of California.
- Certificate to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the CA Board of Registered Nursing.
- Active DEA license
