The Laboratory Operations Assistant plays an essential role in supporting the day-to-day operations of a shared wet lab incubator facility. This part-time, in-person position is ideal for an individual who enjoys hands-on technical work, takes initiative in solving problems, and thrives in a dynamic, collaborative environment.
Working closely with the Head of Lab Incubator and Development and the Lab Facilities and Operations Associate, this position supports the smooth operation of laboratory equipment, safety procedures, inventory systems, and general facility functions. The ideal candidate has a background in life sciences or engineering, is detail-oriented, and demonstrates strong communication and organizational skills in a fast-paced lab setting.
This position will begin as a part-time role, estimated at 25-30 hours per week. The role may become a full-time role later in 2026. Compensation for this position is between $24.00 and $28.00 per hour.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations & Equipment
- Assist lab users with proper operation and care of shared laboratory instruments and equipment
- Provide training and orientation to new and existing users on shared equipment and standard procedures
- Perform daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance of lab instruments and shared resources
- Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting activities
- Interface with vendors and third-party service providers for maintenance, repairs, and service calls
- Support the creation, review, and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for lab operations
Safety & Compliance
- Support the implementation and enforcement of laboratory safety procedures and protocols
- Assist in managing chemical and biohazardous waste in compliance with safety regulations
- Help ensure compliance with EHS, OSHA, and biosafety standards
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment at all times
Inventory & Procurement
- Monitor and maintain lab inventory, ensuring adequate stock of supplies and consumables
- Source, receive, and distribute laboratory consumables, equipment, and accessories
- Support inventory management systems, including equipment and chemical tracking databases
- Handle shipping, receiving, and distribution of incoming and outgoing materials
Customer Service & Facility Support
- Provide timely, professional, and responsive support to lab users and resident companies
- Help enforce equitable access to shared resources and equipment scheduling
- Support ongoing operational improvement projects and initiatives
- Perform other administrative or ad hoc duties as assigned
Position Requirements
Education & Experience
- College degree, technical certificate, or equivalent training in a scientific or engineering discipline
- 1 years of hands-on experience in an academic, clinical, or industry laboratory (preferred)
- Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques and equipment operation
- Familiarity with chemical hygiene, biosafety practices, and hazardous waste management
Technical & Professional Skills
- Comfortable working with laboratory equipment and learning new instrumentation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); familiarity with inventory or booking systems a plus
- Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication; able to communicate with scientific and non-scientific audiences
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team with a high level of initiative and attention to detail
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle for occasional travel to the Soka University lab site in Aliso Viejo
