What You’ll Do
- Provides medical interpretation services under the supervision of the Program Coordinator
- Facilitates clear communication between patients and staff who speak different languages, including spoken languages and sign language
- Ensures accurate and confidential interpretation of medical and related information
- Adheres to hospital policies, procedures, and patient confidentiality regulations
- May deliver trilingual interpretation services in Spanish or Portuguese and American Sign Language (ASL)
- Supports effective and inclusive communication across diverse patient populations
What You’ll Bring
Required
- Fluency in both English and American Sign Language (ASL) required
- Bachelor’s degree in science, language, or human services field required
- ASL fluency must be demonstrated by one of the following:
- Certification from the National Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID)
- Level 4 or higher from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)
- Eligibility to sit for a certification exam
- Additional fluency in Spanish or Portuguese strongly preferred
- Formal training or experience in medical interpretation required
- Must be a “qualified” medical interpreter with a minimum of 40 hours of interpreter training
- Certification from the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters required, or must be obtained within 12 months of hire
- Strong understanding of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds essential
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required
- Ability to perform well under pressure is necessary
- Equivalent experience, education, or training may be considered in place of a degree
