About the Role

The primary purpose of the Phlebotomist I, while under the direction of the Supervisor Accession Area Phlebotomy Team, position is to be responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients, processing computerized worksheets, entering orders for laboratory tests into the computer terminal and retrieving data in response to inquiries from clinical units concerning test results. As phlebotomists, ensures proper collection of blood and body fluids and processing of specimens, and additional duties as assigned under the scope of practice. Performs routine venous phlebotomy procedures for diagnostic testing for various laboratory sections including, but not limited to blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology and coagulation tests; trains phlebotomy students; assists supervisor in completing Phlebotomy Competency Assessment evaluations of Phlebotomists and Phlebotomy Trainees. Performs all services supplied through the Accession Area.

  • Performs phlebotomy and specimen collection procedures by using proper patient identification, determining appropriate collection sites and methods (venipuncture, fingerstick, heel stick), collecting required blood specimens in correct tubes, maintaining specimen integrity, and performing successful venipunctures and collection rounds in accordance with established standards.
  • Conducts routine and special laboratory procedures including glucose testing (2hrPP, GTT), administering correct glucose dosages, explaining patient responsibilities using age-specific approaches, performing blood culture collections and other assigned procedures, and ensuring all assigned patients are collected appropriately.
  • Maintains infection control and documentation standards by performing hand hygiene, following standard precautions, documenting uncollected specimens in Rovers or EPIC, logging collected and mislabeled specimens, and ensuring accurate specimen tracking and verification within the LIS.
  • Processes laboratory orders and specimen records accurately by entering laboratory test orders, reviewing requisitions and specimens for accuracy and acceptability, prioritizing specimen entry according to urgency, handling specimen acceptance or rejection according to policy, and maintaining established quality standards.
  • Provides laboratory communication and customer service support by responding to inquiries regarding test results, retrieving information from the LIS and other records, communicating effectively with laboratory and medical staff, providing complete and accurate reports, and responding promptly, courteously, and efficiently to requests.
  • Coordinates specimen distribution and operational workflow by distributing specimens to appropriate laboratory areas, collecting specimens from clinics and nursing units when needed, routing specimens to correct destinations for processing, loading specimens onto automated systems, supporting LIS downtime processes, and assisting with training new staff and students as directed.
  • Maintains compliance and regulatory standards by adhering to University Hospital’s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest Policy; remaining current with applicable federal, state, and University Hospital regulations, laws, and policies; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent is required. Successful completion of a phlebotomy course given by an academically recognized school of health-related professions is required.

  • Certified by ASCP, NCA or equivalent agency; or eligibility to sit for the certification examination.

  • Candidate must obtain the certification within first six (6) months of employment.

  • Minimum of six (6) months of phlebotomy experience in a hospital/clinical setting preferred.

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)

The expected salary range for this position is $24.31 - $25.56 per year, in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Law; final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
